Syria blames "a burst tire"

Syria insists that the explosion that killed up to 20 people and injured 100 on a bus full of Iranian pilgrims in the heart of Damascus Thursday, Dec. 3, was not an act of terror only a "serious accident" in which a bursting tire killed 3 people. The Iranian news agency, in contrast, described the incident as a terrorist attack which claimed 12 lives.

Pictures spirited out of Damascus show bus had been wrecked and burnt in a manner that could only have been by a large bomb - certainly not a burst tire. Indeed the bus's tires were the only undamaged part of the vehicle. Witnesses reported dozens of bodies were smashed and flung across an area dozens of meters from the blast. The Syrian minister of interior stood by his "accident" claim although the right rear side of the bus was severely damaged, a chunk of the bus nearly the height of a man was missing, and what was left just below the shattered windows was badly mangled. Exposed parts of the chassis also appeared to be charred by fire. The engine compartment at the rear of the bus was severely damaged.

The victims were Iranian pilgrims on a visit to the Shiite shrine dedicated to Sayeda Zenab in the heart of Damascus, not far from Syrian general intelligence headquarters.

Saeed Jalili, head of Iran's national security council, who arrived in the Syrian capital at the time of the disaster, cancelled a news conference he was to have held with foreign minister Walid Muallem. It is possible that some of the officials who came with him were on the doomed bus.

No group has taken responsibility for the bombing. According to DEBKAfile's Iranian sources, Tehran may well exploit the attack to further inflame its military tensions with the United States and Israel by accusing their intelligence agencies of orchestrating it.

DEBKAfile's counter-terror sources estimate that the multi-casualty attack may have been perpetrated by a Sunni fundamentalist offshoot of al Qaeda, several of which operate out of Damascus. The most dangerous is the Fatah al-Islam which has been responsible for previous terrorist attacks in the Syrian capital, including the car-bombing at the same spot as the attack on the Iranian bus on Sept. 27, 2008, The 17 people who died then included a high Syrian intelligence officer.

The NEFA Foundation has obtained an English-language statement regarding the Ft. Hood massacre that was posted by the administrators of the Ansar al-Mujahideen online jihad forum. The statement noted, "We issue this statement in support of the actions of brother Nidal Malik Hassan; as a congratulations for his brave and heroic deed, as well as the jealousness he displayed for the pains suffered by the Muslim Ummah as a result of the modern Zionist-Christian Crusades against it.We ask Allah to accept this great feat of yours and make you an example for others to follow." Further, "It is not permissible for Muslims to aid the infidels in any way in war against the Muslims, whether physically, morally, financially, or strategically. There is a consensus amongst the scholars that whoever does so, even by a mere gesture, has committed an act of apostasy and has left the fold of Islam." It should be noted that the Ansar al-Mujahideen forum has been recently endorsed by the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (the Taliban) as one of their officially approved web venues.

Our Commander in Chief’s immediate response to the jihadist massacre at Fort Hood was “we don’t know all the answers yet and I would caution against jumping to conclusions until we have all the facts.” What facts remain to be gathered? The traitor, betrayer, Muslim, jihadist killer Major Nidal Malik Hasan shouted “Allah Akbar” (additional sources here, and here) as he gunned down his fellow American soldiers. There is nothing else that we need to know.

Mr. Hasan (“Major” is an official title that Hasan no longer merits) is a murderer, a traitor, a coward; he is also a devout Muslim. He is an adherent of the “religion of peace” whose deity and prophet both command him to fight the non-believers, strike terror into them, and kill them if they do not submit to Islam.

“Fighting in Allah’s cause” (jihad) is mentioned over 100 times in the Koran. This is the central core of the doctrine of Islam – jihad against the unbeliever.

Mr. Hasan undoubtedly thought that had he been killed, he would have gone directly to Islamic heaven for killing kafirs and terrorizing the survivors, witnesses, and the entire kafir country to which he had pledged an oath of service. In Islamic doctrine, jihad against the unbeliever is both an obligation and the highest form of devotion to Allah and Mohammed; there is no more devout adherent of the ideology of Islam than the jihadist.

Not equal are those believers who sit (at home) and receive no hurt, and those who strive and fight in the cause of Allah with their goods and their persons. Allah hath granted a grade higher to those who strive and fight with their goods and persons than to those who sit (at home). Unto all (in Faith) Hath Allah promised good: But those who strive and fight Hath He distinguished above those who sit (at home) by a special reward. Koran, 4:95

You will find others who desire that they should be safe from you and secure from their own people; as often as they are sent back to the mischief they get thrown into it headlong; therefore if they do not withdraw from you, and (do not) offer you peace and restrain their hands, then seize them and kill them wherever you find them; and against these We have given you a clear authority. Our mass media, our political and military leaders all pretend that this is not so; that Hasan is another “misunderstander,” another “hijacker” of the “religion of peace.” This is a lie.

There is even the suggestion commonly made now that Mr. Hasan himself was a victim, someone with “problems” as if this could in some way be an explanation or excuse for his Allah-Akbar-jihad-killings at Fort Hood. Such intellectually dishonest “explanations” remove all Islamic linkages to Hasan’s crimes, substituting for his own “Allah Akbar” motive, the more culturally sensitive, politically correct “he-had-some-personal-issues” nonsense.

FORT HOOD, Texas — In the wake of the mass shooting here last week, the U.S. Army announced today that it will look into better ways to identify soldiers showing signs of instability or personal problems.

The announcement came amid increasing reports that friends, relatives and associates of Maj. Nadal Malik Hasan said he showed signs of problems lately, perhaps stemming from political, religious and emotional pressures. (Dallas Morning News, 11/09/2009)

This is the first I have read or heard
about a second bomb at the site of
this terrorist attack.


The second bomb which exploded Saturday, Nov. 28, at the site of the Nevsky Express which was derailed Friday between Moscow and St. Petersburg crash site injured no one. It was less powerful than the first, which left 39 dead and 90 injured Friday near the town of Bologove. The Russian authorities confirmed a bomb of app. 7 kilos of TNT threw the train off the tracks when it was travelling at 200 mph. Elements of an explosive device were found at the scene where rescue teams are still digging for missing passengers.Elements of an explosive device were found at the scene.


The 661-seat luxury Nevsky Express is used by high officials, tycoons and tourists to commute between Moscow and St. Petersburg. Russian authorities say a list of victims will be released as soon as they are identified. North Caucasian Islamist terrorists are suspected of responsibility.

DEBKAfile's counter-terror sources note that the same train was targeted by terrorists in 2007. Sixty passengers were injured then, but no one was killed. Two Chechen suspects were charged

Our counter-terror sources report that attacks by North Caucasian terrorist groups linked to al Qaeda are on the rise in Russia inside and outside their home ground - and not only in Chechnya but also in Dagestan, Ingushetia and Kabardino-Balkaria. This Friday too, the commander of the Dagestan interior ministry's anti-terror task force SOBR was shot dead and a large bomb exploded near the southern train tracks to Makhachkala. A second bomb was discovered near a central pipeline. In Kabardino-Balkaria, police arresting suspects in a car came under gunfire.

President Dmitry Medvedev has declared a day of national mourning.

In Washington, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said, "We are deeply saddened by the terrible loss of life and injuries resulting from the reported derailment of a train between Moscow and Saint Petersburg."

Warning signs on Hasan were missed.

The hand writing was on the wall,
and not just one time. How many

How military missed signs

Failure to grasp threats from those in uniform

As Sen. Joe Lieberman, Connecticut independent, officially begins his inquiry this week into the disturbing failures that enabled Fort Hood shooter Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan to stay in uniform, it must go beyond the normal excuses related to bureaucratic bungling.

With the discussion last week devolving into interagency finger-pointing, lost was the simple fact that the failures were systemic. Although the military has done valiant work fighting in Muslim lands, it doesn't seem to grasp how to assess when Muslim personnel could pose an internal threat.

It's easy to rely on hindsight to second-guess after the fact, but based on what we already know, Maj. Hasan had openly embraced Islamic jihadist ideology. Apparently no one who learned of his online screeds or his verbal rants to colleagues understood this, however.

What officials knew about Maj. Hasan was neither trivial nor inconsequential.

In spring, Maj. Hasan wrote an Internet posting that compared suicide bombers to soldiers who sacrifice their lives by falling on a grenade. His reasoning was that suicide bombers "help save Muslims by killing enemy soldiers."

No more explicit justification could be made for the terrorists who have been targeting U.S. service personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan. Yet reports indicate there was no formal investigation into a soldier who praised suicide bombers who "save Muslims" by killing the very people among whom he lived and worked.

More ominous is that only mild concern was sparked by Maj. Hasan's repeated contacts with a cleric openly affiliated with al Qaeda. Although the content of the 10 to 20 e-mails has been described officially as related to "religious guidance" and Maj. Hasan's "research," no rationale could possibly exist for any soldier independently contacting a high-level enemy figure.

Around the time from late 2008 into early this year that the two were in contact, imam Anwar Al-Awlaki issued a fatwa calling on Muslims to kill U.S. soldiers in Iraq. In January, Mr. Al-Awlaki published a manifesto aptly titled "44 Ways to Support Jihad," a how-to manual on all the paths available - from violence to finance - for his followers.

Had investigators merely Googled Imam Al-Awlaki, they would have found his jihad manual and an in-depth profile on him at the web site of the NEFA Foundation, a U.S.-based counterterrorism organization that maintains the largest public database of open-source terrorism intelligence. They also would have been reminded at the NEFA Web site that Imam Al-Awlaki's recorded sermons helped inspire the terrorists who unsuccessfully targeted Fort Dix, N.J., three years ago. In fact, the Fort Dix plotters specifically praised the imam's lecture encouraging self-motivated jihad.

None of that mattered to investigators, because Maj. Hasan didn't explicitly discuss violence or terrorism with his mentor. Traditional metrics for assessing criminal danger, though, do not neatly apply to jihadists.

Most jihadist attacks are not driven by appeals to violence or wanton bloodlust. The stated motive for most jihadists is some form of defending Islam or innocent Muslims from an evil aggressor.

Someone falling into the lure of jihadist ideology becomes a threat long before he even discusses violence. Danger begins with the embrace of a paranoid worldview in which the United States has waged war on pious, peace-loving Muslims. That the United States is fighting self-identified Muslims in two Islamic nations, of course, only makes it easier for jihadists to win over Muslims.

Maj. Hasan didn't just parrot jihadist lines about evil America, though. He openly argued for Islamic violence against the United States. And that was just what he said in front of his colleagues.

Yet despite a pattern of truly incendiary comments - such as telling colleagues during a PowerPoint presentation on Islam in 2007, "We love death more then [sic] you love life!" - he remained in uniform. Much of the evidence points to a critical question: Was Maj. Hasan treated differently because he was a Muslim?

Perhaps the simplest analysis is by way of comparison. In one reported instance, Maj. Hasan told his colleagues that he supported the Muslim who shot two soldiers, killing one, at a military recruitment center in Little Rock, Ark.

Imagine if Maj. Hasan had instead been a secular, garden-variety anti-American radical who told his colleagues that he supported the murder of his fellow soldiers. Is there any doubt such remarks would have generated at least more than the indifference Maj. Hasan's various comments did?

Just as Muslim soldiers should not be presumed unpatriotic, less cannot be expected of them than from their non-Muslim peers.

Defending terrorists and openly identifying with the enemy should be an obvious infraction for any soldier. The same goes for demonizing America or contacting known terrorists.

If the military doesn't change the mind-set that allowed those actions to be ignored or shrugged off, the consequences could be even more devastating the next time.

Designed by award-winning Israeli artist Eliezer Weishoff and commissioned by the Jewish National Fund-USA/Keren Kayemet L'Israel (JNF-USA/KKL), the memorial depicts the World Trade Center and Pentagon through sculpture and landscape architecture.


All of the buildings were attacked by Arab terrorists who hijacked commercial airliners and used them as suicide weapons, flying the planes directly into the structures. The two Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in downtown Manhattan, New York, were completely destroyed in the conflagration that followed. The Pentagon, located in Washington D.C., was damaged but not destroyed in the simultaneous multi-site attack.

A fourth airliner, aimed at the White House, was stopped from reaching its target by passengers on the plane determined to prevent the hijackers from achieving their goal. They gave their lives to attack the terrorists in their own suicide mission that led to the downing of the plane in a field in nearby Pennsylvania.

People from nations around the world lost their lives that morning, among them a number of Jews, including Israelis. Fewer Jewish New Yorkers than usual were present in the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001, however, because many had stopped on their way to work to vote in fiercely-contested local primary elections.

The 30-foot high bronze sculpture commemorating the event and honoring the memories of the victims is composed of a waving American flag transformed into a memorial flame. The monument rests on a base of gray granite, part of which comes from the original Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in downtown Manhattan, destroyed in the mammoth airliner attack eight years ago. The sculpture, which was funded by the Bronka Stavsky Rabin Weintraub Trust, is surrounded by a circular, crater-like plaza and reflection area tiled in stone.

The Jerusalem monument is one of the first major international memorials to mark the terrible event and honor the memory of its victims -- and the only site outside of New York to recognize the names of every victim of the attack.

Memorial donor and native New Yorker Edward Blank explained that he funded the project as a means of expressing the myriad conflicting feelings he struggled with after the tragedy. "My wife died just a few days before 9/11," he said, "and then the whole world was sent reeling by the events of that day. I was looking for a meritorious way to recognize the many feelings I was having, and this memorial was the perfect fit."

U.S. Ambassador to Israel James Cunningham attended the ceremony dedicating the monument, as did U.S. Congressman Erik Paulsen, who led a delegation from the United States. They were joined by Israeli Cabinet ministers, Knesset members and many families of the victims of 9/11, as well as other distinguished guests.

KENT, Conn. — Peter Gadiel wants everyone to remember his son, James,
who  was killed during the September 11 terrorist attacks.


And he also wants people to remember how he died: "Murdered by Muslim terrorists."

Heroes to many Muslims

For Gadiel, any tribute to his son would be woefully incomplete
without those words.

"I think it's important, because I think there's a nationwide effort to suppress
the identity of the people who were involved in the attacks,"
Gadiel told Fox News.


Eight years ago, 23-year-old James Gadiel worked for Cantor Fitzgerald on the
103rd floor of the World Trade Center. He died when a hijacked plane
crashed into the North Tower.

For years, Gadiel's hometown of Kent, Conn., has wanted to honor the
young man with a memorial plaque next to its town hall. But the tribute
has hit a snag because James' father wants to include the phrase,
"Murdered by Muslim terrorists," under his son's name.

For Peter Gadiel, it is a central fact of the Sept. 11 attacks that is often left out.

"It isn't just overlooked, it's suppressed," Gadiel said. "It's simply wrong to
 imply that people just died. The buildings didn't just collapse,
 they didn't just fall down — they were attacked by people with a
 specific identity, a specific purpose."

Town officials call the phrase too controversial for a small town memorial,
and they recently voted against erecting the plaque if Gadiel insists on the language.

"We perceive ourselves as a very warm, loving town," said Ruth Epstein, a Kent selectman
and one of two town leaders to vote the plaque down. "To disparage any one ethnic group
 is just against everything that we stand for here."

How would Ms. Epstein feel if it was one of
her children that had been killed by these
murdering scum?

Epstein noted that other Sept. 11 memorials, like the one at the Pentagon,
don't mention Muslim terrorists, and she said she does not want to alienate
 any members of her small and close-knit community.

"We have at least one Muslim family living here with children and it — it would
be just awful to have them see something like that," Epstein told Fox News.

Why? Islam never wants to take
responsibility for the horror that
is inherently found within Islam
and it's holy book, the Koran.

But for Gadiel, it's an important message that he insists be present on
 any tribute to his son.

"Muslims have to acknowledge that it was their co-religionists who committed
this act in their name," he said. "I am offended that unlike so many others,
they refuse to acknowledge that it was their people who did this."

They will never acknolwedge that it was
their fellow Muslims that did this on 9/11.
That would unheard of for Islam or most
Muslims. Islam offends me. We can rest
easy in knowing that if this memorial ever
does get bulit with such words inscribed,
CAIR and the ISNA would be right there,
ready to start litigations and threats against
the town for erecting such a truthful
memorial. Islam has never been asble to handle
the truth.
