International Islamic Jihad is a new item on the global menu of terrorism. New, in that it did not exist 30 years ago. We had terrorism and isolated terrorist attacks but nothing like we are living through today. This can be laid at the feet of Islam and Muslims. Not all Muslims are terrorist but all terrorists are Muslims is one we have all heard. Those who are in denial of this fact are Islamists, Islamoapologists and those who suffer from the mental illness of political correctness, diversity and the worst of them all, multiculturalism. I am sick and tired of listening to liberals and conservatives play down the threat from Muslims and Islam. Terrorism and jihad now link the enire globe in a way that many of us thought could never happen. To be witnessing the now constant attempts to wage terrorist attacks inside the United States makes this patriot very upset and angry. Angry and upset at a president who is an arrogant, ignorant Muslim, who thinks being nice and apologizing to Islam and Muslims will buy us credibility and safety in an ever increasingly hostile world. Those waging jihad will NEVER stop until they are completely and totally eradicated. This may not happen in my lifetime or yours but happen it must.
This article from Serbianna traces the history of Islamic Jihad. You will have to use the link provided to read the entire article as it is quite long. Worth your time? Absolutely! What price do we put on educating ourselves about our enemy? Education is priceless. Especially in the study of Islam and the never ending jihad it is waging on the entire world.
International Islamic Jihad: The first global terrorist movement in history
By Ioannis Michaletos
From Serbianna:
1. The Spread of Jihad
The past two decades a new form of terrorism has spread dynamically in a worldwide level. The USA was one of the first countries to alert itself since the late 80’s with this kind of asymmetrical warfare, but it wasn’t until 9/11 that the full strength of the Islamic-driven terrorism was shown. The 19 hijackers proved to be a peril for the security of the world, in greater respect that rogues states and third world dictatorships. The fanatics of Islam have engineered a new way of war through the Salafist Jihad, and without restrains concerning civilian casualties. The new terror is composed by networks of individuals spread throughout the globe that provide logistic support to the mercenaries and soldier of Islam that perform terrorist actions.
The global wave of violent extremism from its bases in Egypt and Saudi Arabia was matured in Afghanistan, Sudan and in parallel formed a network of cells in Eurasia. Moreover a part of the second and third generation Muslims in the Western world is being introduced in the Jihad so as to penetrate the societies from within, leaving less space for security and intelligence agencies to counterbalance the ongoing pressure of terrorism. The Al Qaeda and the new terror are also cooperating with the Sunni organizations in Iraq that has gained combat experience in the fighting between Muslims and the USA-UK troops. Actually Iraq has become a training field for thousands of Islamic extremists that will transfer their know-how in their homelands once they return. The older Al- Qaeda generation was war-hardened in the mountainous Afghanistan terrain, whilst the new generation gains its experience in the Mesopotamian plain. In the 90’s it was also the Balkans and Sudan that provided training for Islamists that fought Croatians and Serbs in Bosnia and Kosovo.
Another phenomenon that greatly facilitates the spread of Jihad is the existence of internet and the expansion of telecommunications. It is possible to acquire an extensive geographical span, by using simple techniques and make use of the modern day technology. The basic principles that characterize new terror are: Mass casualties, use of new technologies, international-multinational membership and of Islamic religious base. The basic aim of the Jihad is to establish a Caliphate by overthrowing moderate Muslim leaders and the final goal would be to evolutes a power unit equivalent to the West on a global scale. Al Qaeda is by itself an evolution of the “Mind of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad, the education by the Pakistani Madrassas, the capital of the Saudi Wahhabis and the fighting capabilities of Yemenis, Chechens and Algerians”.
2. Salafism
The worldwide Salafist Jihad is an extreme version of Sunni Muslims. The etymology of the word originates from “Salaf” that in Arabic means, ancient. It is basically a return to the archaic nature of Islam as it was developed before the Middle Ages. Al Qaeda in its turn is the basic pole on which ideologically and logistical the other organizations and networks strike the West.
Jihad means, “Fight”, but in daily life and the adhesion in keeping up with daily prayer, charity and Ramadan fasting by the Muslims. It also has the meaning of the fight against infidels, and it is a major theological controversy amongst Muslim theology scholars in our days. Nowadays quite a few Islamic religious leaders issues Fatwa (Orders) against Westerners –Or moderate Muslims- thus energizing the populous against the other nations, in a battle resembling Manichaeism. During the 80’s the Palestinian born and Egyptian educate, Sheikh Abdullah Azzam, issued numerous fatwa in order to recruit fighters for Afghanistan and pioneered the use of this orders to conduct global recruitment. Azzam was directing the use of Afghanistan as a purely Islamic state, whilst Bin Laden (That allegedly assassinated him in 1989), was eager to create an international Islamic front and attack several targets simultaneously. In reality Bin Laden was a radical and Azzam a conservative, and in the late 80’s the former was able to control the Islamic network for his own initiative.
Salafism originated from an 18th century Islamic sect in present day Saudi Arabia. Mohamed Ibn Abd Al Wouahab a religious leader of his time preached for a return in the original Islamic tradition and eschewed modernity in every mode. He proceeded in cooperating with the forefather of the Saudi dynasty, Mohamed Ibn Saud and formed the actual basis for today’s puritanical version of Islam in that country. In the 20th century Sayib Koutb, an Egyptian Islamic ideologist of the “Muslim Brotherhood”, elaborated the basics of Jihad and called for an abolition of secularism in the everyday life of all Muslim dominated societies, as well as, the overthrow of moderate administrations. The real difference with Al Qaeda and the older generations is the ability of Bin Laden and its followers to strike globally and not just in local level or a particular country. In 1996 Bin Laden issued his infamous Fatwa for war against the Americans, where he also mentioned the ousting of the Saudi dynasty, reflecting thus a totalitarian view of the new terror that ensued. In 2001, his number 2, Ayman Al-Zawahiri named all the enemies of Islam that included the West, pro-Western Muslim states, multinational corporations, international media and charity funds. In a sense it aims to topple the world as it is known. The Salafism is not longer a movement towards stricter enforcement of Islamic principles, but a global anti-Western campaign, being conducted through the use of asymmetrical warfare.
3. The Start of It All
In 1987 Al Zawahiri established in Peshawar-Afghanistan the Islamic Jihad organization and issued a monthly journal, named Conquest. The published was Al-Sharif and other editors included, Al Rashidi, Mohammed bu Sittah, Rifai Taha, Mustafa Hamza and Mohammed Al-Istanbul. These are known as the “Egyptian group”, that functioned as the ideological punch of the latter Al-Qaeda. Osama Bin-Laden soon placed the aforementioned in key sections of his organization and both created the Masada training camp in the town of Khowst, from where a new breed of Mujahedin was trained. The withdraw of the Soviet troops in 1989 was a major victory for Osama Bin Laden that saw his popularity rising in the Islamic world. In the 24th of November Azzam (See part 2 above) was assassinated with his two sons because he objected the creation of a global Jihad. Afterwards Bin Laden capitalized the war between Iraq and the UN forces, along with the stationing of Western troops in Saudi Arabia and in parallel formed a pact with Al Turabi, an influential spiritual leader in Sudan. This state would become an integral hub for the coordination of attacks in the 90’s. Al Qaeda spread also in London where it issued a radical paper, named Al Ansar and recruited people from across the Arab world that facilitated greatly in dispersing its ideology and Mujahedin in all corners of the earth.
Al Qaeda evolution is similar to that of a multinational corporation with its peripheral offices, managers, sub-contractors and clients. It also created committees and project groups, while it continued its struggle in the new front of the Balkans, during the Bosnian war in 1991 to 1995. This is where it first established presence in Sarajevo, Albania and in parallel the first cells appeared in Hamburg, Amsterdam, Paris and Milan. During the Sudanese period, Al Qaeda was also formidable in Afghanistan, Bosnia, Philippines and Yemen. In 1996 Bin Laden and 150 of his followers were forced to leave Khartoum under Western pressure and returned to Afghanistan. The leader of the Taliban, Mullah Mohammed Omar provided assistance and viewed Al Qaeda as a staunch ally. Soon –In 1998- the first major terrorist hit in Kenya and Tanzania proved the peril that Al Qaeda is to the world, albeit no concrete action was taken apart from some sporadic missile attacks by the USN.
The American victory in Afghanistan in October 2001 didn’t result in the destruction of Al Qaeda. The labyrinth of cells across the world ensured for the continuation of their existence and managed to perform other spectacular attacks against targets in Istanbul, Casablanca, and Bali, Madrid. Riyadh and London. The difference with older attacks is the loose coordination that makes almost impossible for the security forces to identify the heads behind every action. Moreover the bonds between Al Qaeda members and officials for the Pakistani ISI, still remain, as well as, contacts and cells in Saudi Arabia, Kashmir, Bosnia, Indonesia and Iraq. These are the regions where Al Qaeda is popular and rather strong despite prosecution.
4. Global Jihad
The worldwide Salafist Jihad is a formidable network of human resources and capital aimed at striking terror against the West. The main culprits and the organizers of the Jihad, are mostly of Saudi and Egyptian origin, and contain members from virtually any country that has a Muslim segment in it. Also it is interesting to note that the majority of the Al Qaeda members are rather affluent and educated, and do not constitute a group of people of disadvantaged status. They are apt in the new technology and quite a few of them have completed numerous studies in technical schools that prove to be of an advantage when organizing terrorist attacks.
Moreover the terrorists do not exhibit in most respects the characteristics of paranoid personalities and they are able of keeping in pace with the rest of the society, adopt foreign costumes superficially and keep in tune with the wider developments in the world. They are also trained internationally by Al Qaeda and have the ability to travel easily (Before 2001) in foreign countries. In a nutshell they do not represent the majority of the Muslim world and are in terms of social-economic status some where in between the elite of the Arab world and the mainstream classes. The main elements of Al Qaeda that conduct the strategic operation and the training are mostly Egyptians, Saudis and Pakistanis.
5. Think global, act local
Since 9/11 Al Qaeda managed to muster popular support in the Islamic world for its actions, by being seen as the defender of the faith and the only power that challenged the West. The most important organizations of the Islamic Jihad against the West presently are: Al Qaeda, Al Jama’a Al Islamiya, Islamic Jihad, Armed Islamic Group (GIA), and the organization of Al Zarqawi in Iraq. GIA in Algeria is being gradually absorbed by the Group for Dawa and Combat. One of the leading Islamic figures that played a role in directing Jihad on a global scale is Al Zawahiri, who was very much influenced by the teachings of the Muslim Brotherhood of Egypt.
The main reason why Jihad passed from the local theatres to the global one is the one way option it faced if it didn’t want to be annihilated by conventional forces. By using the globalizations process it could facilitate it s survival by following the flow of the international commerce, immigration and transport. Otherwise, a defeat in a locality would mean the end of their organizations. Despite the fact that Arab regimes such as Libya or Saudi Arabia, have cooperated spectacularly with the West; Islamic Jihad is far from being disrupted and continues to strike almost annually somewhere in the world. The war in Iraq is stimulation for an expansion of its global role, since it recruits Mujahedeen from different states, sends them and facilitates their return to be used as potential terrorists, of a trained nature. Just some Christians in Africa, right?

There have been several hundred Christians killed, murdered massacered in Nigeria. So where is the global community's outrage about this tragic situation. If just one Palestinian gets killed, especially a child, it seems the entire global community is up in arms and bashing those evil Jooo's for their oppressive, murdering, duplicitous ways. Can you feel the love yet? Oops I forgot. That is something that is almost forbidden in Islam and under shariah law, that love thing. Unless it is all for Islam and Allah.
"It’s a shame that people in this country don’t believe those of us who warn about creeping Sharia and Islam. To a certain extent, it’s understandable, especially when the media just ignore not only global massacres but the obvious happening right here in our own back yard. There is enough blame to go around. I mean, we have such important things to concern ourselves with here; health care reform, unemployment, the price of gas and let’s not forget the Toyota recalls that seem to be never-ending.
Would it make the headlines if over a thousand Christians had been killed in, say, a South Carolina town for no other reason than they are simply Christian? Well, per capita, that is exactly what is happening in Nigeria. Funny how, when I do see a story on it, it is usually buried somewhere inside the paper or it’s just a small 30-second story on the television news.
The stories are horrifying, the pictures are stomach wrenching – men, women and babies, yes, babies being hacked into pieces by machetes."

Gadi Adelman, Christians are killed by the hundreds for no reason other than they are Christian. Where is the world outcry and at what point will someone we know be next?

Well, per capita, that is exactly what is happening in Nigeria. Funny how, when I do see a story on it, it is usually buried somewhere inside the paper or it’s just a small 30-second story on the television news.
The stories are horrifying, the pictures are stomach wrenching – men, women and babies, yes, babies being hacked into pieces by machetes.
The BBC reported on it back in March, “Hundreds of people, including many women and children, were killed in ethnic violence near the city of Jos in Nigeria at the weekend, officials say. They said villages had been attacked by men with machetes who came from nearby hills. Many of the dead in the villages of Zot and Dogo-Nahawa are reported to be women and children.”
The report continued, “Mark Lipdo, from the Christian charity Stefanos Foundation, said Zot village had been almost wiped out.”
He said: "We saw mainly those who are helpless, like small children and then the older men, who cannot run, these were the ones that were slaughtered."
A resident of Dogo-Nahawa said that the attackers had fired guns as they entered the village before dawn on Sunday in defiance of a curfew.
“The shooting was just meant to bring people from their houses and then when people came out they started cutting them with machetes," Peter Jang told Reuters news agency.
Some witnesses said villagers were caught in fishing nets and animal traps as they tried to escape and were then hacked to death. Mud huts were also set on fire.”
The reason I bring this up now, again in April, is because mass graves of people are still being found and I still hear little or nothing about this. When do we as Americans, as people, as human beings start to look around us and say ENOUGH!
Bishop Andersen Bok, national coordinator of the Plateau State Elders Christian Fellowship, along with group Secretary General Musa Pam, described the attack as yet another "jihad and provocation on Christians."
"Dogo Nahawa is a Christian community," the Christian leaders said in a statement. "Eyewitnesses say the Hausa Fulani Muslim militants were chanting 'Allah Akbar,' broke into houses, cutting human beings, including children and women with their knives and cutlasses."
Well, there you have it yet again. “Allah Akbar.” It seems to be a recurring theme and I for one am sick of it. I am tired of writing week after week and month after month, but not many Americans seem to be moved by the catastrophe around us. Do we need another worldwide holocaust to occur before we stop worrying about our petty problems and wake up? What happened to the caring, concerned America I remember? I see commercials on television that $10.00 can buy a net in Africa to save a child from malaria, yet those same nets are being used as traps to catch women and children like animals so they can be slaughtered and cut into pieces and burned…and for what? Because they are not Muslim?
ENOUGH!
How is it that Toyota has more of an impact on the news than innocent people being slaughtered merely because their religious belief is Christianity? What the hell is wrong with us that we just sit idly by when this is happening and the media decides it just isn’t newsworthy?
The AP had reported about it, but I saw it on the internet via the Baptist Press, not in any paper; “On March 5, Abel Damina, the national youth president of the PFN, expressed concern over cases of clandestine killings of Christians in remote parts of Plateau state by Islamic extremists and called on the federal government to retrieve sophisticated weapons in their possession.”
"Even as I speak to you now, I am receiving reports that some clandestine killings are still going on in the remote areas of Plateau State by the fundamentalists," Damina was quoted as saying. "They pounce on Christians and kill them without anybody knowing much of their identity except that they are Christians."
He added that recently he visited the governor in Jos regarding the crisis and secured photos of Christian victims.
"Young men, Christians, were going to their farms to harvest their produce and the fundamentalists pounced on them," Damina said. "They were called infidels. At the last conference, we received reports with photographs of the fundamentalists using AK-47 rifles to destroy our churches. Where did they get the arms from? We have reports of truckloads of arms that had been intercepted, and we did not hear anything about them."
You can sit back and worry about your own little world and assume that this doesn’t affect you and, when it eventually hits closer to home and you start to worry, it will be too late; or you can arm yourself with education and information. You can read my articles where, in each and every one, I have written about this very subject. You can go to dozens of sites and join groups like ACT for America, Stop the Islamization Of Europe (SIOE), Jihad Watch, Muslims Against Sharia just to name a few. You can go to my website, gadiadelman.com for links to many informative sites and videos.
It is, after all, only Africa and a few hundred people, so perhaps it isn’t all that important. Maybe going out to dinner would be more fun?
The choice is yours.

Israel send Syria a message to not use those Scud missles.

Israel has sent the terrorist state of Syria a message to not use ballistic missles against the Jewish state. The article states that Washington and so called 'moderate Arab states' are worried and alarmed about this new threat that Israel is facing. Not too worried about Iran obtaining nukes are they, as evidenced by nothing being done against Iran. Washington is worried? About what, Hezbollah's new toys derailing the Mullah Obamaham's appeasing overtures to the Assad regime in Syria? The first Muslim POTUS got his answer when Hezbollah obtained the Scuds.
Israel warns Syria over Hezbollah attacks
Timesonline, Israel has delivered a secret warning to Syrian President Bashar Assad that it will respond to missile attacks from Hezbollah, the militant Lebanese-based Islamist group, by launching immediate retaliation against Syria itself.
In a message, sent earlier this month, Israel made it clear that it now regards Hezbollah as a division of the Syrian army and that reprisals against Syria will be fast and devastating.
It follows the discovery by Israeli intelligence that Syria has recently supplied long-range ballistic missiles and advanced anti-aircraft systems to Hezbollah.
“We’ll return Syria to the Stone Age by crippling its power stations, ports, fuel storage and every bit of strategic infrastructure if Hezbollah dare to launch ballistic missiles against us,” said an Israeli minister, who who was speaking off-the-record, last week.
The warning, which was conveyed to Damascus by a third party, was sent to reinforce an earlier signal by Avigdor Lieberman, the Israeli foreign minister. “If a war breaks out the Assad dynasty will lose its power and will cease to reign in Syria,” he said earlier this year.
The Israeli decision to hold Syria directly responsible for Hezbollah’s actions is believed to be the result of intelligence assessments that Beirut has lost control of the Shi’ite organisation, which has become an increasingly powerful force in Lebanon.
Reports that Syria has supplied Hezbollah with Russian-made Scud ballistic missiles have alarmed Israeli ministers. The missiles have the potential to reach the entire country and could carry chemical warheads. New gas masks are being supplied to Israel’s entire population, with an intensive television advertising campaign underway to stress their importance.
Hezbollah, which was set up in 1982 by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard and fought a 34-day with Israel in 2006, has built-up an arsenal of 40,000 missiles and rockets, according to Ehud Barak, Israel’s defence minister.
Uzi Rubin, an Israeli missiles expert, estimated that 13,000 are aimed at Israel at any one time. “Iran is financing Hezbollah and Syria, which has opened up its military supplies to them, is being repaid by Iran,” said an Israeli intelligence source.
Over the past few months, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah has threatened Israel with reprisals, promising that any attack on Beirut’s airport would be followed by a rocket attack on Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion airport.
The supply of Scud missiles to Hezbollah is seen as a serious threat by the Israelis. “This is the first time that an internationally known terror organisation has been equipped with ballistic missiles,” said the minister.
Washington and moderate Middle Eastern leaders, including King Abdullah of Jordan, are worried. “We are obviously increasingly concerned about the sophisticated weaponry that is allegedly being transferred,” said Robert Gibbs, the White House spokesman.
Last week Syria’s Foreign Ministry denied that there had been any transfer of Scud missiles. It claimed the allegations were aimed at giving Israel a pretext to attack Syria and avoid making concessions for peace.
But the Israelis remain defiant. “We’ll not hesitate to attack Syria if our national security is in jeopardy,” said the Israeli minister. “Assad knows that, and he’s playing with fire.”

We are not a Muslim nation. Muslims make up a tiny majority of our population. A tiny majority that causes our country death, destruction, millions of dollars in legal fees battling the spread of Islam, shariah law by having to defend our way of life, culture, liberty, freedom against the impostion of Islam. This is against our collective will.
This article speaks the truth. Islam, Muslims are a grave danger to this country, and us. I am not saying all Muslims are bad or terrorists but WHO has been guilty of almost all acts of terrorism not only here but around the world? It is not the Christians, Jews, Hindus, or Buddhists. It is Islam and Muslims that wage a global war of terror strictly for the reason of establishing a global Islamic caliphate. One perverted ideology to rule us all.
Taking terrorism seriously
Alan Caruba
Warning Signs, I keep wondering when the world is going to begin to take Islamic terrorism seriously.
The world’s leaders and, in particular, the media could begin by calling it “Islamic” or “Muslim” terrorism. The media were, of course, thrilled to discover that America had a small band of homegrown nut cases, a Christian militia arrested before they did some serious harm. That’s the kind of thing that happens when the president and the government begins to be regarded as the anti-Christ.
I liked Vladimir Putin’s response to the Moscow bombings. He said of those responsible, “We will destroy them.”
The suicide bombers in Moscow will no doubt be identified—there was video of their entering the station—and an efficient national security apparatus will find out who they are, who their family is, who their friends are, and invite them in for some interrogation. They are not likely to be read Miranda rights, nor will their lawyers be present.
The reason for this is that they are potentially all terrorists.
America has been devoted to treating the terrorists we captured on the battlefields of Afghanistan and Iraq as humanely as possible. Those incarcerated at Guantanamo were given copies of the Koran, their dietary laws were observed, ACLU and other lawyers were permitted access to advise them of their “rights.” Under the Geneva Convention, however, they are exempt from the rules of war and have no rights as combatants.
The Attorney General of the United States of America, a former resident of La-La Land, didn’t think it was the least bit odd to suggest trying Khalid Sheik Muhammad, the 9/11 mastermind, in a civil court in the heart of New York City.
Any number of the Gitmo detainees have been returned to their homelands and have since turned up on the battlefield again. This suggests we do not take terrorists seriously. These are, after all, people who cut the heads off of other people.
Meanwhile, the Department of Homeland Security has an odd notion of who poses a threat to the nation. They identified “right-wing extremists” as their primary concern, particularly those who express concern about the central government’s expansion, opponents of abortion, opponents of illegal immigration, and “disgruntled” veterans returning from the battlefront. No mention of left-wing extremists.
The first rule of war is “know your enemy.” In the space of a decade, they have shown up in New York, London, Madrid, Bali, Mumbai, and in Moscow; all killing civilians indiscriminately on buses, on trains, in subways, in skyscrapers, and at resorts. Before that, they devoted themselves to kidnapping Americans in Lebanon and blowing up two of our embassies in Africa.
From the streets of Paris where Muslims rioted at will to Malmo, Sweden where attacks on local Jews are driving them to leave the country, the story is always the same. Wherever Muslims become a sufficient number of the population, they begin to make demands, harass the locals, and in the Netherlands to murder an outspoken opponent of Islam in broad daylight. The Dutch response has been to put on trial a man who is warning of these dangers.
The British cannot accommodate them enough, while the French have decided it is far better to be French than Muslim, passing several laws to protect their cultural traditions and society.
The impact on Americans has mostly been to turn a trip to the airport into a complete nightmare, but few other restrictions have interfered with their normal activities. Despite valiant efforts by our border patrol, our southern border goes largely unprotected. The insane murder rate from the drug wars in Mexico will arrive any day now in the U.S.A.
The small U.S. Muslim population has been free of harassment, but the organizations claiming to speak for them have all been identified as having links to the Muslim Brotherhood and related jihadist organizations.
Who takes the jihadists, the terrorists seriously? Saudi Arabia where they just rounded up a large ring of al Qaeda conspirators, Pakistan where they have finally begun to hammer the jihadis in Waziristan and other frontier provinces, and just about every nation with a Muslim majority.
The official and rather perfunctory response to the Fort Hood shootings and the “underwear bomber” on Christmas suggests that our government has forgotten the message that arrived on September 11, 2001 or has decided that “right-wing extremists” are the real problem.
That’s unfortunate because the terrorists have an agenda of their own and, unless the global effort is made to find them and kill them, the attacks will be as common as movie listings in the daily newspaper. Or should I say obituaries?
In Cairo, in 2009, President Obama said, “You might say the United States is a Muslim nation.” Some might call this seriously mistaken and some might say it is wishful thinking.
Islamic terrorism remains the great concern of most Americans who probably need to be more watchful of their Muslim neighbors and co-workers. That would have gone a long way toward saving the lives of the Fort Hood victims.

Explosions rock Moscow subway. Over 40 dead, so far..
I was going to post something else but this just came in and I have been away for a few hours. China Confidential has a great report and looks a bit into the not so distant past in regard to Russia's battle with terrorism and Islamic terrorists.
Latest update: Women suicide bombers kill dozens in Moscow attacks Times online
Explosions rock Moscow subway, terrorism suspected.
China Confidential, 1:30 AM UPDATE: AT LEAST 41 KILLED. TWO BLASTS CONFIRMED.
Death toll in explosion at Moscow's central Lubyanka metro station rises to 25--TASS, quoting Emergency Ministry spokeswoman Irina Andrianova.
The huge blast occurred at 7:50 AM on Monday, during rush hour, when thousands of passengers were packed onto trains.
Andrianova says the dead include 14 people who were in the train's second car where the blast occurred and 11 people who were waiting on the platform of the station.
A second explosion happened at the Park Kultury station, about 40 minutes later, Russian news agency Tass reported.
Suicide Bombings Suspected
Interfax says the blasts may have been caused by suicide bombers.
The headquarters of Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB), the successor to the Soviet-era KGB, is located just above the Lubyanka station.
Today's explosions follow the Islamist bombing of the Nevsky Express passenger train last November, which killed 27 people and injured 90.
As China Confidential reported in December, the bombing of the Nevsky, a Moscow-Saint Petersburg luxury train that is popular with businesspeople and tourists, raised fears of a resurgence of Islamist terrorist attacks in Moscow and other major cities.
Russia was hit hard by Islamist terrorism in the 1990s and the early years of this decade, but the violence has largely been confined to the predominantly Muslim North Caucasus region since 2004.
Sixty people were injured in an attack on the Nevsky Express in August 2007. Fifteen people were injured in the 2005 bombing of a train headed to Moscow from Chechnya, and a suicide attack in the Moscow metro killed 41 and injured approximately 120 in 2004.

Twin Subway Blasts Kill at Least 20 in Moscow
By CLIFFORD J. LEVY
MOSCOW — Huge explosions during morning rush hour in two subway stations in central Moscow killed more than 20 people on Monday, officials said, raising fears of a renewal of terrorism here.
The causes of the blasts were not immediately clear, but the government said it suspected suicide bombers, Russian news agencies reported.
The subway system, one of the world’s most extensive, had been subjected to attacks related to the separatist war in Chechnya in the early part of the last decade.
Officials said the first explosion Monday occurred at 7:50 a.m. in the Lubyanka subway station, killing people both on the platform and aboard an incoming train. Numerous others were injured.
“The blast hit the second carriage of a metro train that stopped at Lubyanka,” Irina Andrianova, a spokeswoman for the emergency ministry, told Reuters.
About 40 minutes later, another explosion occurred in the second car of a train at the Park Kultury station, officials said. The number of casualties was not immediately known.
In September 2004, a suicide bomber killed at least 9 other people and wounded more than 50 outside the Rizhskaya subway. In February of that same year, a woman carrying a bomb destroyed another subway car, killing at least 41 people as the train moved between the Paveletskaya and the Avtozavodskaya stations at one of the busiest times of the day.
The Lubyanka station, where the first explosion occurred, takes its name from the infamous Lubyanka prison that also served as the former headquarters of the K.G.B., the Soviet-era secret police.
