That this country has lost its way is quite obvious to all except those on the left who detest what our country was built upon and how; a Judeo-Christian foundation, strong morals and ethics. Understanding Liberal Disillusionment – Part 1

The idea that Judeo-Christian religious morality is the basis of a just society is a foundational concept in the creation of the United States. This once pervasive concept has now fallen from favor within certain loud segments of society regardless of the high esteem in which it was held by the universality of our Founders. Rejection of the religion-based worldview of the Founders is the core around which liberal anger is constructed.
Where matters of morality, religion, history, and ethics are concerned in the United States today, there is now no “middle.” Among people of good will and reasonable intellect there is a fundamental disagreement not about the nature of morality and ethics, but rather about their value and provenance. One side defends the importance of morality and its origins in religion; the other takes an evangelical, rejectionist position.
Our Founders credited the future success of the United States on God’s guidance, adherence to Judeo-Christian religion, and to Christian religion-based morality. The historical record of our foundational documents and the private papers of our Revolutionary leaders show this to be true.
It is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free constitution is pure virtue.
And
[W]e have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. . . . Our constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other. (source)
John Adams’ cousin, Samuel Adams, patriot and signer of the Declaration of Independence, founding member of the Committees of Correspondence, and one of the leading independence agitators responsible for the radicalization of the Massachusetts Colony against British rule went much further.
For Samuel Adams the Revolution was not only about “independency” – he had even loftier goals. Adams hoped for the return of Puritanism and the creation of a nation founded on Christian principles.
In Sam Adams’s eyes, the American Revolution was to do far more than establish an independent state; it was to purify society, revolutionize manners and morals, and pave the way for another Puritan age.

There are few now who know much of Samuel Adams but what they see on a beer label.
There are fewer still who would suggest that the return of Puritanism is now a desirable outcome.
Far fewer suggest (as many Progressives do) that religion, and a desire to fulfill/implement God’s concept of justice and goodness on earth (as they were understood by the Founders and their generation and delineated in Jewish and Christian doctrine), were not fundamental to those who created the United States. Such an overtly inaccurate position surpasses simple denial, though without the usual blather of convolutions and bloviating – it’s merely a lie.
While this revisionist position is difficult to defend – mainly because it is false – there are many who promulgate this counter-historical view.
Even Jefferson, the noted populist and “Deist”, credited God for the wisdom that guided the Founders during the American Revolution. Jefferson concluded his first inaugural address with the following request to the American people and to God.
Relying then on the patronage of your good will (ed. the people), I advance with obedience to the work, ready to retire from it whenever you become sensible how much better choices it is in your power to make: and may that infinite power which rules the destinies of the universe, lead our councils to what is best, & give them a favorable issue for your peace and prosperity. (Thomas Jefferson, First Inaugural Address, 1801)
Jefferson concluded his second inaugural address with similar themes:
shall need, too, the favor of that Being in whose hands we are, who led our forefathers, as Israel of old, from their native land, and planted them in a country flowing with all the necessaries and comforts of life; who has covered our infancy with his providence, and our riper years with his wisdom and power; and to whose goodness I ask you to join with me in supplications, that he will so enlighten the minds of your servants, guide their councils, and prosper their measures, that whatsoever they do, shall result in your good, and shall secure to you the peace, friendship, and approbation of all nations. (Thomas Jefferson, Second Inaugural Address, March 5, 1805)
A cursory review of the lives of the Founders, their public utterances, and personal and private papers shows a deep link between them, their belief in God and the divine source of morality and its derivation from Judeo-Christian religious principles, doctrine, and tradition. Few public officials today outside of the religious sphere (almost all on the right) discuss morality, its roots in religion, and the importance of Christian and Jewish thought to the foundations of the country. When they do speak in public of such things, they are excoriated for doing so by those on the Progressive Left and also by many others who ought to know better.
A case in point is the vitriol directed at former Governor Sarah Palin and Delaware Senate candidate Christine O’Donnell. Both are conservative politicians who speak about morality and link Bible-based morality with public policy.
The rejection of morality in politics by the American Left is nothing less than an ongoing denial of the religious origins of our country and our national character. Many on the Progressive Left have embraced a post-modernist worldview.
Post-modernism posits a radical equivalence that views all religions and all cultures as equal. This concept of radical equivalence is also the foundation of multiculturalism. The deconstruction then of the Founders’ faith, its importance in the development of the country and of its continued value is necessary to support post-modernism and multiculturalism’s worldview and utopian goals.
A central problem to the advancement of the post-modernist view is the origin of American law and morality in Judeo-Christian religion, and our understanding of the central dichotomies around which such laws are built: good/evil, right/wrong, just/unjust, etc. The rejection of the morality of the Founders and the support today for Islam (our Founders did not at all support it ) among American leftists is illustrative.
Islam does not view these essential dichotomies upon which our laws are based in the same way that Americans do. Regardless, the Left views Islam as a fellow-traveler in the deconstruction of American institutions and has therefore allied itself with Islam and Islamists.
The same approach was taken by Iranian leftists prior to the 1979 Islamist Revolution. After the Shah was overthrown leftists there unpleasantly discovered that their views were not at all compatible with totalitarian Islam.
It is difficult to comprehend the cooperative relationship between far left (American Progressives) and extremist totalitarian forces (Islamists) especially when history shows that such relationships can only be temporary. Alliances of convenience between political opposites are usually short-lived and end …poorly. The Iranian leftists learned this lesson. While I was reading the list of names in from the previous post, I received this in an email from ResistNet.com. This is a bit long but I really hope you will read the entire article as it has ALOT of information about Bob Filner and his friends that must get out and be shared. These people are power hungry jackals and share this problem with the mullah in the White House. Please note the ties with many far left progressive socialists and the vile organization, JStreet. I have mentioned JStreet before and I have nothing good to say about Jstreet, nothing. An organization that seeks to destroy Israel and foster the spread of islam. It should change it's name to JINOStreet.

Bob Filner - Red Diaper Baby and Socialist Sympathizer

Bob Filner is a Democratic Congressman for California's 51st District. Without doubt he is one of the most far left members of the U.S. House of Representatives.
This is not surprizing, as Bob Filner's father, Joseph Filner, was once a leading member of the Communist Party USA.
In the 1940s Joseph Filner, when not changing baby Bob's red diapers, was running a bakery business and serving as secretary of the Pittsburgh Communist Party.
After WW2, Joseph Filner entered the scrap metal business. He founded the Stainless and Alloy Corporation of America, eventually expanding its scope of operations worldwide and becoming a major agent for Soviet products and technology in the West.
One of Joseph Filner's early business colleagues was Stanley Levison, a secret Communist and treasurer and money launderer for the Party.
Joseph Filner never forgot his socialist roots. In his later years, he used his wealth to create a charitable foundation, the Frieda Foundation, through which he gave to many leftist causes, especially programs to "rid the world of the threat of nuclear annihilation."
In the 1980s Joseph Filner was a member of the far left American Committee on East-West Accord, a Washington, D.C.based tax-exempt "independent educational organization", with the stated aim of "improving East/West relations, with special focus on U.S.-Soviet relations."
Joseph Filner also endorsed the Kennedy-Hatfield Nuclear Freeze Resolution which was introduced in the Senate on March 10, 1982.
After beginning adult life as an early '60s student radical, and as a college professor Bob Filner decided to run for Congress.
One of the people who campaigned for him was Andrew Young, then the far left mayor of Atlanta, Ga. Young remembered, Joseph Filner well. At one point, he told a campaign rally that he supported Bob Filner's candidacy not only because of their shared Democratic viewpoints, but also, quite simply, "because of his daddy.
Bob Filner entered congress in 1990 and a year later was a founding member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, a grouping of far left Congressmen organized by openly socialist independent Congressman Bernie Sanders and Democratic Socialists of America.
Bob Filner went on to form a very close relationship with D.S.A. - the U.S's largest Marxist-based organization, which endures to this day.
In August 1996, over 300 people attended the San Diego Hearing on Economic Insecurity, "a forum intended to hammer home to a message to our elected officials that working America is hurting and to demand that government take corrective action."
For two hours, a panel that included Congressman Bob Filner (D), California Assemblywoman Denise Ducheny, and five candidates who may soon hold seats in Congress and the California Assembly listened while a steady stream of local people told their stories. Testimony came from workers, seniors, welfare mothers, men and women seeking work and students soon to join … "
The Hearing, involved groups such as the Gray Panthers, the ultra-radical National Lawyers Guild, Welfare Warriors and labor unions, but was initiated as a project of San Diego Democratic Socialists of America.
However the main work in organizing and publicizing the hearing was carried out by DSA members...San Diego DSA realized that an effort of this magnitude needed a full time paid organizer. We were fortunate to be able to hire Stephanie Jennings, a veteran supporter and organizer of progressive action.... Stephanie kept in close touch with Boston DSA, with Alan Charney and Michele Rossi and DSA national office, with Chris Riddiough in our Washington DC office and with Tim Parks, Eric Vega and Duane Campbell in other California chapters. Bob Filner even donated his campaign office to DSA phone bankers, soliciting support for the event;
Congressman Bob Filner donated the use of his campaign office for a week of nightly phone banking by DSA volunteers..
In November 1999, Bob Filner attended D.S.A's national convention, conveniently held in his home town of San Diego, where he had the honor of introducing his old comrade Bernie Sanders to the assembled socialists.
In 2004 San Diego Democratic Socialists of America supported Filner's successful Congressional race.
Meanwhile, San Diego DSAers are involved in progressive Democrat Bob Filner’s 51st CD reelection race. DSA supported Filner again in 2006.
San Diego DSA produced an email recommendation sheet for the membership covering all races and propositions on the November ballot, a popular tradition of the local that people ask for as elections approach. Activist members there went precinct walking for Representative Bob Filner.
In 2008 Bob Filner attended a San Diego DSA function organized for City Council candidate Stephen Whitburn.
SD-DSA held a forum with about 20 participants on “DSA, the Left, and the Presidential Election.” They organized a fundraising event in April for City Council candidate Stephen Whitburn, which was attended by Congressman Bob Filner and raised about $1000
On Oct. 26, 2009, Bob Filner spoke alongside fellow Congressional Progressive Caucus members, Jared Polis and the D.S.A. affiliated Jan Schakowsky at the JStreet 2009 Conference.
JStreet is a leftist Jewish organization that, according to its website, "was founded to change the dynamics of American politics and policy on Israel and the Middle East".
JStreet has several Democratic Socialists of America members within its leadership and is regarded by its opponents as one of the most dangerous anti Israel groups in the country. They charge that JStreet's real purpose is not to help Israel, but to help steer U.S. foreign policy away from supporting Israel to the benefit of that country's Palestinian and Arab enemies.
In February 2010, the first JStreet-sponsored congressional mission toured Israel, Jordan and Palestinian-controlled areas. Five members of Congress participated in the tour; Lois Capps, Bill Delahunt, Bob Filner, Mary Jo Kilroy and Donald Payne.
It was stated that the mission "will meet with Israeli government and opposition leaders as well as key regional leaders, including Jordanian King Abdullah II and Palestinian National Authority Prime Minister Salam Fayyad. The delegation will travel widely in Israel, the Palestinian Territories, and Jordan taking a close look at the situation on the ground through the eyes of policy makers and civil society leaders."
All members of this delegation came from the far left side of Congress and one, Ohio Democrat freshman Mary Jo Kilroy, has been a confirmed member of Democratic Socialists of America.
This was not Bob Filner's first effort at international bridge building.
In February 2002 a delegation of leftist California Democratic Party Congressmen and women including Sam Farr, Diane Watson, Bob Filner and Mike Thompson, together with singer Carole King, visited Havana as part of the "latest effort to change U.S. policy toward Cuba."
Carole King serenaded Fidel Castro with "You've Got a Friend" at a weekend dinner, replete with wines from Napa and Sonoma.
The delegates said their dinner with Castro at the Palace of the Revolution stretched from 9 p.m. Sunday until about 4:30 a.m. Monday. During the meal, King also performed a new song, "Love Makes the World."
Daddy Joseph Filner, wherever he is now, is surely proud that baby Bob has yet to change those red diapers.

Many of you may recall what is in this next post. I felt this was worth mentioning again as we must not forget it and what was elected into the most powerful office in the world, the office of President Of The United States.

Sooner or later it will all come to light!
Chrysler's Railroad
This could be a scandal of epic proportions and one that makes Nixon's
Watergate or Clinton 's Monica Lewinsky affair pale by comparison. Why
was there neither rhyme nor reason as to which dealerships of the
Chrysler Corporation were to be closed?
Roll the clock back to the weeks just before Chrysler declared
bankruptcy. Chrysler, like GM, was in dire financial straits and
federal government "graciously" offered to "buy the company" and keep
them out of bankruptcy and "save jobs."
Chrysler was, in the words of Obama and his administration, "Too big
to fail," same story with GM.
The feds organized their "Automotive Task Force" to fix Chrysler and
GM. Obama, in an act that is 100% unconstitutional, appointed a guy
named Steve Rattner to be the White House's official Car Czar -
literally, that's what his title is.
Rattner is the liaison between Obama, Chrysler, and GM.
Initially, the national media reported that Chrysler 'had made this
list of dealerships'. Not true!
The Washington Examiner, Newsmax, Fox News and a host of other news
agencies discovered that the list of dealerships was put together by
the "Automotive Task Force" headed by no one other than Mr. Steve
Rattner.
Now the plot thickens.
Remember earlier we said that there was neither rhyme nor reason why
certain dealerships were closed?
Actually there's a very interesting pattern as to who was closed down.
Again, on May 27, 2009, The Washington Examiner and Newsmax exposed
the connection.
Amazingly, of the 789 dealerships closed by the federal government,
788 had donated money, exclusively to Republican political causes,
while contributing nothing to Democratic political causes. The only
"Democratic" dealership on the list was found to have donated $7,700
to Hillary's campaign, and a bit over $2,000 to John Edwards. This
same dealership, reportedly, also gave $200.00 to Obama's campaign.
Does that seem a little odd to you?
Steve Rattner is the guy who put the list together. Well, he happens
to be married to a Maureen White. Maureen happens to be the former
national finance chairman of the Democratic National Committee. As
such, she has access to campaign donation records from everyone in the
nation- Republican or Democrat. But of course, this is just a wacky
"coincidence," we're certain.
Then comes another really wacky "coincidence."
On that list of dealerships being closed down, a weird thing happened
in Arkansas , North Louisiana, and Southern Missouri . It seems that
Bill Clinton's former White House Chief of Staff, Mack McClarty, owns
a chain of dealership in that region, partnered with a fellow by the
name of Robert Johnson.
Johnson happens to be founder of Black Entertainment Television and
was a huge Obama supporter and financier.
These guys own a half dozen Chrysler stores under the company title of
RLJ-McClarty-Landers. Interestingly, none of their dealerships were
ordered closed - not one!
While all of their competing Chrysler/Dodge and Jeep dealership were!
Eight dealerships located near the dealerships owned by McClarty and
Johnson were ordered shut down. Thus by pure luck, these two major
Obama supporters now have virtual monopoly on Chrysler sales in their
zone.
Isn't that amazing?
Go look in The Washington Examiner, the story's there, and it's in a
dozen or so other web-based news organizations; this isn't being made
up.
Now if you thought Chrysler was owned by Fiat, you are mistaken. Under
the federal court ruling, 65% of Chrysler is now owned by the federal
government and the United Auto Workers union!
Fiat owns 20%.
The other 15% is still privately owned and presumably will be traded
on the stock market. Obama smiles and says he doesn't want to run the
auto industry.
As horrifying as this is to comprehend, and being as how this used to
be the United States of America , it would appear that the president has
the power to destroy private businesses and eliminate upwards of
100,000 jobs just because they don't agree with his political agenda.
This is Nazi Germany stuff, and it's happening right here, right now,
in our back yard.
There are voices in Washington demanding an explanation, but the
"Automotive Task Force" has released no information to the public or
to any of the senators demanding answers for what has been done.
Keep your ear to the ground for more on this story. If you've ever
wanted to make a difference about anything in your life, get on the
phone to your national senator or representative in the House and
demand an investigation into this.
Benjamin Franklin had it right when he said, "All that's necessary for

An amazing thing happened as this story was going to press. Obama's
Car Czar, Steve Rattner, resigned on July 13 and was promptly replaced
by former steel workers union boss Ron Bloom.
According to CBS News, Rattner left "to return to private life and
spend time with his family."
Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner said, "I hope that he takes another
opportunity to bring his unique skills to government service in the
future."
By the way, Rattner is under investigation for a multi-million dollar
pay-to-play investment bank scandal in New York ....
Uh-oh!
But, we're certain that had nothing to do with his resignation.
And, according to several news sources out there, there are rumors
he's being investigated for what could be pay-to-play scandal
involving the closing of Chrysler and GM dealerships. Really? Again,
that couldn't have anything to with his resignation-that's ridiculous!
Like CBS said, this guy just wants to "spend more quality time with
his family."
Obama has 32 personally appointed "czars" who answer to no one but
him, all of whom are acting without any Constitutional authority.
But hey, we're sure they all have "unique skills,".....as Tim
Geithner likes to say!

Chrysler Railroad story
Sooner or later it will all come to light!
Chrysler's Railroad
This could be a scandal of epic proportions and one that makes Nixon's
Watergate or Clinton 's Monica Lewinsky affair pale by comparison. Why
was there neither rhyme nor reason as to which dealerships of the
Chrysler Corporation were to be closed?
Roll the clock back to the weeks just before Chrysler declared
bankruptcy. Chrysler, like GM, was in dire financial straits and
federal government "graciously" offered to "buy the company" and keep
them out of bankruptcy and "save jobs."
Chrysler was, in the words of Obama and his administration, "Too big
to fail," same story with GM.
The feds organized their "Automotive Task Force" to fix Chrysler and
GM. Obama, in an act that is 100% unconstitutional, appointed a guy
named Steve Rattner to be the White House's official Car Czar -
literally, that's what his title is.
Rattner is the liaison between Obama, Chrysler, and GM.
Initially, the national media reported that Chrysler 'had made this
list of dealerships'. Not true!
The Washington Examiner, Newsmax, Fox News and a host of other news
agencies discovered that the list of dealerships was put together by
the "Automotive Task Force" headed by no one other than Mr. Steve
Rattner.
Now the plot thickens.
Remember earlier we said that there was neither rhyme nor reason why
certain dealerships were closed?
Actually there's a very interesting pattern as to who was closed down.
Again, on May 27, 2009, The Washington Examiner and Newsmax exposed
the connection.
Amazingly, of the 789 dealerships closed by the federal government,
788 had donated money, exclusively to Republican political causes,
while contributing nothing to Democratic political causes. The only
"Democratic" dealership on the list was found to have donated $7,700
to Hillary's campaign, and a bit over $2,000 to John Edwards. This
same dealership, reportedly, also gave $200.00 to Obama's campaign.
Does that seem a little odd to you?
Steve Rattner is the guy who put the list together. Well, he happens
to be married to a Maureen White. Maureen happens to be the former
national finance chairman of the Democratic National Committee. As
such, she has access to campaign donation records from everyone in the
nation- Republican or Democrat. But of course, this is just a wacky
"coincidence," we're certain.
Then comes another really wacky "coincidence."
On that list of dealerships being closed down, a weird thing happened
in Arkansas , North Louisiana, and Southern Missouri . It seems that
Bill Clinton's former White House Chief of Staff, Mack McClarty, owns
a chain of dealership in that region, partnered with a fellow by the
name of Robert Johnson.
Johnson happens to be founder of Black Entertainment Television and
was a huge Obama supporter and financier.
These guys own a half dozen Chrysler stores under the company title of
RLJ-McClarty-Landers. Interestingly, none of their dealerships were
ordered closed - not one!
While all of their competing Chrysler/Dodge and Jeep dealership were!
Eight dealerships located near the dealerships owned by McClarty and
Johnson were ordered shut down. Thus by pure luck, these two major
Obama supporters now have virtual monopoly on Chrysler sales in their
zone.
Isn't that amazing?
Go look in The Washington Examiner, the story's there, and it's in a
dozen or so other web-based news organizations; this isn't being made
up.
Now if you thought Chrysler was owned by Fiat, you are mistaken. Under
the federal court ruling, 65% of Chrysler is now owned by the federal
government and the United Auto Workers union!
Fiat owns 20%.
The other 15% is still privately owned and presumably will be traded
on the stock market. Obama smiles and says he doesn't want to run the
auto industry.
As horrifying as this is to comprehend, and being as how this used to
be the United States of America , it would appear that the president has
the power to destroy private businesses and eliminate upwards of
100,000 jobs just because they don't agree with his political agenda.
This is Nazi Germany stuff, and it's happening right here, right now,
in our back yard.
There are voices in Washington demanding an explanation, but the
"Automotive Task Force" has released no information to the public or
to any of the senators demanding answers for what has been done.
Keep your ear to the ground for more on this story. If you've ever
wanted to make a difference about anything in your life, get on the
phone to your national senator or representative in the House and
demand an investigation into this.
Benjamin Franklin had it right when he said, "All that's necessary for

Why socialism has failed. From RJ Moeller, Voice In The Wilderness

I have followed RJ Moeller's A Voice In The Wilderness for some time now. I think RJ has a unique insight and brings a fresh perspective into the field of politics, religion, economic and discussions about society. No, RJ is far from perfect and I do not always agree with him 100%. He is a Christian Conservative and he evn admits that the people he admires were not without their faults. In this next post RJ Moeller is writing about socialism and why it has failed, and will continue to fail. We have failed states of socialism all around us, especially in Europe. There is plenty of evidence. Is our system better than socialism? I think so but that was BEFORE massive government meddling and the burdens of excessive and stifling legislation. Socialism at it's roots was anti-religion and against God. There is no refuting that. If you have not read any of his previous articles please check them out here or go to his site. It may be best to start at the beginning and read Mere Conservatism Economics Parts 1 and 2. That way you will have a foundation and better understanding of where RJ Moeller is coming from. Dostoevesky Was Right, And I Hate Socialism

In the opening pages of his masterpiece The Brothers Karamazov Fyodor Dostoevsky gives a description of the key players the reader is to meet in his epic tale of generational sins and familial redemption. The third and virtuous Karamazov brother Alyosha is commended by the narrator not only for his devout and fervent faith in God, but the methodic patience and due diligence he exhibits in his pursuit of moral truth and wisdom. In contrast to the rudder-less passion that so many young people of that generation (1860's Russia) had for new and constantly-changing "causes," Alyosha is described as follows:
"The path he chose was a path going in the opposite direction of many his age, but he chose it with the same thirst for swift achievement. As soon as he reflected seriously on it, he was convinced and convicted of the existence of God and of the immortality of the soul, and at once he instinctively said to himself: 'I want to live for immortality with Him and I will accept no compromise.'
In the same way, if he had decided that God and immortality did not exist, he would at once have become an atheist and socialist. For socialism is not merely the labor question, but it is before all things the atheistic question, the question of the form taken by atheism today. It is the question of the tower of Babel built without God, not to mount to Heaven from earth but to set up Heaven on earth."
I couldn’t have said it better had I blogged it myself.
As much as I would love to write an entire column on the subtle genius of Dostoevsky’s analysis of the human condition in Brothers, let me focus like a laser-beam on the profound insight he made some 150 years ago regarding the “question” of socialism. Socialism, the economic and political theory that advocates for the state to control the means of production and oversee the distribution of resources, was relatively new back in Old Fyodor’s day and the assumption among intellectuals from Moscow to Mexico was that it would inevitably become the way all countries ran their government, society, and economy.
Now, with the winds of a century-and-a-half of unflattering evidence at our back, it ought to be much easier to identify the failings and false assumptions of countries that adopted Leftist (i.e. collectivist, Marxist, and socialist) creeds for the management of their nation. I say “ought to be easier” because it seems that each new generation in Western nations thinks that it will be the one to find that elusive utopian pot-of-gold at the end of their artificially-created, progressive rainbow. These dreamers have it set in their minds that the problems with socialist thought are all superficial ones.
If we only had the right leader. If people just knew the good intentions we have in trying to help them. If the citizenry could just be educated properly. If the right piece of legislation were to be passed. If bothersome things like the traditional family structure and local church were to disappear.
Equally frustrating are the responses (or lack thereof) from Americans who don’t believe in top-down socialism, yet remain unconvinced that those who do believe in it are supporting something that is a potential threat to their way of life.
We’re not going to turn into Cuba tomorrow, so why all the fuss? Progressive liberals aren’t really advocating socialism. The American system is too strong to be disrupted by a few rabble-rousers at Harvard and in the media. The Bible doesn’t say that much about “politics” so I don’t think we should even worry too much about it. Ever heard of “separation of church and state”, bro?
What the naïve on both sides of the political aisle in this country are missing is this: the problem with socialism is not simply this or that policy, this or that leader, this or that educational improvement. The problem with socialism (and any ideology using socialism as its proverbial North Star) is an inherent rejection of a Higher Power, mankind’s fallen state, and the immortality of the human soul.
Of course not every liberal, progressive, leftist, or out-right socialist is irreligious, but the ideas that have fueled the ideological Left’s engine for two centuries (about the same amount of time America’s Judeo-Christian, free-market value system has been in place) come from the minds of irreligious men and have almost exclusively produced irreligious results.
This matters, or should matter, to anyone who claims to believe in God. Almost any recent study puts that number at about 90% of Americans. In the 18th and 19th centuries, thinkers such as Robert Owen, Henri de Saint-Simon, and Friedrich Engels began to lay the intellectual groundwork for socialism’ move from a fringe idea to the most dominant socio-political force of the 20th century. They rejected private property. They loathed the excesses and exploits of industrialization. They believed in the supremacy of science and the ability of the enlightened human mind to coordinate the activities of millions of less-enlightened human beings.
Above all else they denied the existence of a personal, rational God and any moral code for living He might have.
This aversion to the divine wasn’t some peripheral, incidental motivation for the founders of modern socialism: it was as foundational to their ethos as “endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights” is to the American one. Committed socialists have always been either adamantly anti-religious, or at the very least, unrelenting critics of religion.
Belief in a Higher Power carries with it certain realities for our day-to-day lives, and even for the way we construct a society and government. For example, it requires humility to acknowledge “there is a God, and I’m not Him.” Such humility is a precursor for the acceptance that mankind is not inherently good, but actually inherently flawed (and in need of redemption). If I’m flawed, then we’re all flawed. If we’re all flawed, then the idea that we can centralize power in the hands of a few and trust their good will and judgment to organize the lives of 300 million people living in the most technologically-advanced, complex civilization in human history becomes untenable (and literally impossible).
Social engineering, an irreplaceable plank in the socialist platform, never works because of the complexities of even the simplest societies and so the socialist committed to science and logic is left floating in the wind with an idea that doesn’t produce the results their theories promised it would.
It is here that the secular collectivist and socialist, realizing that no matter how hard they try they can never fully eradicate man’s primal desire for higher truths and objective standards, begins to invoke language that is soaked in moral, religious connotations. Words like “justice”, “compassion”, and “fairness” are bandied about on the Left by everyone from Karl Marx to Bill Maher. To compound the confusing, contradictory positions they take, socialists seek out religious leaders sympathetic to their anti-capitalist, anti-establishment message.
As I wrote about last summer, Barack Obama moved to Chicago 25 years ago for this very reason. An atheist until his late 20’s, then Barry Obama responded to an ad in The New York Times looking for a young, articulate minority activist to come work in the South-side neighborhoods of the Windy City to help advance the secular-socialist dream of fundamentally changing America as envisioned by the grand puba of community organizing: Saul Alinsky. The people that recruited Obama were, like Alinsky before them, white secular socialists who thought that their inability to capture the hearts and minds of the black and Latino neighborhoods had to do more with the color of their own skin than their revolutionary message. What Barack Obama found out from a local pastor named Jeremiah Wright was that to be taken seriously in these predominantly religious communities, young Obama would have to be in church on Sundays.
Dostoevsky had something to say about this wolves-in-sheep’s-clothing tactic the secular-Left constantly employs as well. During a conversation later in Book One of Brothers Karamazov, a minor character named Peter Miusov recalls the words of a French police inspector put in charge of squashing the 1848 socialist uprising in France.
“We are not particularly afraid of all these socialists, anarchists, atheists, and revolutionists; we keep watch on them and follow all of their doings. But there are a few peculiar men among them who believe in God and are Christians, but are at the same time socialists. Those are the people we are most afraid of…The Christian who is a socialist is to be dreaded far more than the socialist who is an atheist.”
This unholy union between church and big-State proponents is as ironic as it is prevalent throughout the history of the last two centuries. While I can never know the heart or real motivation of someone who claims to believe in both the God of the bible and the tenets of socialism, I can know (and judge) their actions and the results of the things they publicly promote.
I want to be as clear as I possibly can: I hate socialism, in all its various forms and guises. I hate it like I hate the habitual, willful sins in my life that I struggle with on a daily basis. I hate it like I hate the thought of someone who has access to clean water refusing to drink it in favor of contaminated pond-water just because they dislike the person offering them the bottle of Aquifina.
It doesn’t matter if we’re talking about the political, economic, or historical aspects of socialism: it all stinks (and to high heavens).
Rejecting socialism and the notion that the centralization of power and redistribution of income are compatible with liberty and prosperity does not mean that one must instantly become a Ronald Reagan-loving capitalist. It also doesn’t mean that every opponent of socialism has to sign their name to a theologically uniform document, or even be a religious person themselves.
My concern today is two-fold: First that those of you reading this that do hold Judeo-Christian convictions would at least recognize the fundamental rejection of God that lay at the very heart of socialist (Leftist) thought. And second, whether you are a believer or not, that you would have had your intellect intrigued enough to set out to find out if I’m accurate in my appraisal (or at least my agreement with Dostoevsky’s appraisal) of socialism.
