Some terribly sad news from the UK

The UK has gotten some very sad news this weekend. The popular footballer Gary Speed has passed away at the age of 42. Speed had played for Leeds United, Newcastle United , Everton, Bolton Wanderers and Sheffield United. He was "capped" 85 times for Wales, which is a record for an outfield player.

Liked and respected by people within the game and fans alike, Speed had latterly been the manager of the Welsh football team.

Speed had appeared on TV at the weekend along with Gary McAllister, another ex-footballer, and had appeared to be in fine form.

Sadly, according to news reports, Speed had hanged himself shortly afterwards, and as is often the case in such situations, the body was found by a family member. Police were called to his home, and events ran their course.

Football people have been quoted in every newspaper and TV news programme in the UK paying tribute to Gary Speed. People from my generation will remember him as a grand footballer and a total professional. A real "Mr. Dependable".

Saw this in our local fishwrapper's sports section and thought of you fast away, Nick.

While i do not follow soccer or 'football' over there very closely, I know Speed has an outstanding reputation and was very well liked.

So Sorry and these things are a sad part of our lives.
