The VA: Taking Care of the Troops?

Back in the 1980s, when I was stationed in Italy with DEA, our medical costs were covered by the State Department since we were working in the embassies and consulates. In Milan, we also had access to the health clinic at the American Army base at Vicenza-a 2-hour drive away. On one occasion, I saw a doctor there about a minor skin problem I was having. He told me that they couldn't handle it there, but that they could arrange to have me "medevacked" to the army hospital in Nuremberg, Germany (medically evacuated). No, that didn't mean they were going to load me on a helicopter and fly me off immediately to Nuremberg. It meant that I could travel to Nuremberg at government expense and have my problem treated there at the larger facility. Since Nuremberg was just outside my old army station at Erlangen, I jumped at the chance. Subsequently, I caught a commercial flight to Nuremberg and visited the hospital. All expenses were covered.

That story came back to my mind during my just concluded trip to Germany. During my visit, I became friends with an American army veteran who has lived in Germany for 20 years now. ( I am keeping his name anonymous for obvious reasons.) He was stationed in Germany in 1991 when his unit was called up to go to the Middle East to drive the Iraqi army from Kuwait Op. Desert Storm). Unfortunately for him, he came down with that mysterious Gulf War Syndrome that also affected thousands of other soldiers who were involved in that war.

Returning to his post in Germany, my friend married a German woman, got his discharge in Germany, had two kids (now teenagers) and has become a legal resident alien in Germany. But there has been that problem with his illness, which plagues him to this day. To control the pain, he takes two capsules of morphine a day. He describes his symptoms as being almost identical to fibro myalgia.

But here is the kicker: Since he was living in Germany, the Veterans Administration told him they couldn't do anything for him unless he traveled to the US for his medical treatments. His applications for help and treatment were denied.

Fortunately, since he is a legal resident in Germany, it is that country which is covering all of his medical expenses. The US regulations were changed in 2011, but he would have to go through the whole application process all over again with all the attendant paperwork.

Compare my minor little experience with that of my friend. I am glad that the regulations were changed in 2011, but I question why they existed in the first place. In the 1980s, I was able to get treated by military doctors in Europe, and I wasn't even in the military. Is something wrong here?

Common Core: White Voters Rejected Obama Because Of Race

Posting with no comment but this:

Yes, of course the only reason I rejected him. What a lie. Having followed BHO from his days in Chicago it was very easy to understand he was NOT a person I would vote for because of his beliefs and politics. It has NOTHING to do with his skin color but whatever, call me raaaccciiisssttt one more time. Is that all you can claim against me and many, many others? Pathetic. This is what kids are reading???? NO brainwashing here. PatriotUSA

Outrageous!… Common Core Book Teaches Children White Voters Rejected Obama Because of Race
Fourth graders in Dupo Illinois are reading a biography of Barack Obama by author Jane Sutcliffe. The book teaches children that white voters rejected Obama because of race. What absolute BS. The Illinois Review reported:
The book – brought to the attention this week of those on the “Moms Against Duncan – MAD” Facebook page, goes on to say white Americans were hesitant to vote for a black president, and that Obama pushed the race issue to bring the nation together.

“But some people said Americans weren’t ready for that much change. Sure Barack was a nice fellow, they said. But white voters would never vote for a black president. Other angry voices were raised. Barack’s former pastor called the country a failure. God would damn the United States for mistreating its black citizens, he said.
MORE RIGHT HERE

This is one of the most disgusting lies I’ve ever read. Liberals are by nature liars and racists but this is beyond the realm of reality.

The Republic WILL be restored from the ashes of tyranny

The Republic WILL be restored from the ashes of tyranny.

“Stand your ground. Don’t fire unless fired upon. But, if they want to have a war, let it begin here.” — Capt. John Parker, Lexington Company of the Middlesex County Brigade, Massachusetts Militia, April 19, 1775

We have learned nothing from history and after what went down in Mordor on the Potomac today, the issue of fighting for freedom has jumped to the front burner.
Many of us have been aware of what was at risk for many, many years. Today, the price paid for freedom just got more costly. To what extent I do not know. Do you, kind reader? We know the darkness of evil we are up against and what can be done? To sit still or do nothing will ensure that you, your loved ones, everything you see, feel THINK that is true freedom, will taken from you by force, under the guise of the government knowing what is best for you.

"How long the American sun will continue to rise might depend on whether defiance or cooperation is seen as the best symbol of an enduring Republic." (source)

The American sun is a lot lower in the sky after the vote today.

Here is but one sample and this goes way past the stink hole that is California:

California Department of Justice agents sweep Fresno, Clovis for illegal guns

Now the ability of minority dissent has been stripped away in D.C. by today's 'vote' pushed by the communists who hide under the skirts of 'progressives.' Think Deblasio who was just elected mayor of New York City. Think Obama, Reid, Pelosi, and all who voted for the nuclear option just so they can force their collectivist agenda through with activist judges who will do this bidding of this regime.

They are coming. Rest assured, they are here. They are already here and did you notice or did you fall for all the shiny, pretty distractions the regime has frantically thrown at us as their house of cards collapses around them? Think Obamacare and how desperate the progressive regressive liberals now are. This is why they voted to strip away the strength of the filibuster.

One thing for sure and I will keep repeating this: Mitch McConnell must be defeated in Kentucky in 2014. Do not think for one second he supports anything that resembles TRUE CONSERVATIVE VALUES. He and establishment Republicans are not what is now needed for this fight. Think tea party and beyond.

I close my comments with this: Think of 1775 and those who fought at Lexington Green and what follows is from sundance over at the Treehouse. There are many who are much wiser than I am. Not to mention better writers. I think I have insight as to how Ben Franklin may have felt on September 17th, 1787 the final day of the Constitutional convention.

“Mr. President, I confess that there are several parts of this constitution which I do not at present approve, but I am not sure I shall never approve them. For having lived long, I have experienced many instances of being obliged by better information, or fuller consideration, to change opinions — even on important subjects — which I once thought right but found to be otherwise.

“The older I grow, the more apt I am to doubt my own judgment and to pay more respect to the judgment of others. Most men, indeed as well as most sects in religion, think themselves in possession of all truth — and that, wherever others differ from them, it is so far error.

“When you assemble a number of men to have the advantage of their joint wisdom, you inevitably assemble with those men all their prejudices, their passions, their errors of opinion, their local interests and their selfish views. From such an assembly, can a perfect production be expected?

“Thus I consent, sir, to this constitution. The opinions I have had of its errors, I sacrifice to the public good.

“If every one of us, in returning to our constituents, were to report the objections he has had to it and endeavor to gain partisans in support of them, we might prevent its being generally received — and thereby lose all the salutary effects and great advantages.

“Much of the strength and efficiency of any government in procuring and securing happiness to the people depends on the general opinion of the goodness of the government, as well as of the wisdom and integrity of its governors. I hope, therefore, that we shall act heartily and unanimously in recommending this constitution.

“On the whole, sir, I cannot help expressing a wish that every member of the convention who may still have objections to it would, with me, on this occasion doubt a little of his own infallibility — and to make manifest our unanimity.”

What happened in Washington D.C. today will divide us more than ever. The divide in the swamp will now be of epic proportions. I must close now and do yourself a favor and read the following articles at the links below.

Now is the time for all good men and women to come to the aid of their Republic.

"The fight didn’t just “get real”, it’s been “real” for quite a while.    But today, the battlements ensconced, they moved inside the wire.   I submit to you my brothers and sisters that today, this November Twenty One, became St. Crispin’s day.

“Fix Bayonets My Brothers” - [...]  That he which hath no stomach to this fight,….

…..Let him depart; his passport shall be made,
And crowns for convoy put into his purse;
We would not die in that man’s company
That fears his fellowship to die with us.
This day is call’d the feast of Crispian.
He that outlives this day, and comes safe home,
Will stand a tip-toe when this day is nam’d,
And rouse him at the name of Crispian.
He that shall live this day, and see old age,
Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours,
And say ‘To-morrow is Saint Crispian.’
Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars,
And say ‘These wounds I had on Crispian’s day.’
Old men forget; yet all shall be forgot,
But he’ll remember, with advantages,
What feats he did that day. Then shall our names,
Familiar in his mouth as household words-
Harry the King, Bedford and Exeter,
Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester-
Be in their flowing cups freshly rememb’red.
This story shall the good man teach his son;
And Crispin Crispian shall ne’er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered-
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne’er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition;
And gentlemen in England now-a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs’d they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin’s day.

The ghost of Joe McCarthy-American Spectator

This is a post I wanted to do a few days ago but life has just gotten in the way. It is a bit chilly here in the hinterlands of the high desert. Temps are forecast to drop to 0 to 5 above tonight, tomorrow night and remain  very cold for the rest of this week. If it drops BELOW zero, I would not be surprised at all. Just toss more wood into our now recently EPA banned , illegal wood stove. At the moment there is not enough firewood for this winter but I am working on that. There are three pipes that freeze every year unless the stove is stoked way up and I place space heaters on the vulnerable lines. The same drill almost every winter. No, I have NOT split any wood as I would have so many people on my case if I did and like I can right now? No, and this is what teenage slave labor is for and I have exploited the kids of the gulag quite well.

I grew up learning how bad communism and socialism were. This was taught in school, we saw in this in cartoons we watched, it was taught in books, history classes and through many  guest speakers. This was all before the communists, now re-branded as progressives had seized control of education, media and Hollywood. My history professors in college were not brainwashed communists or liberals who hid behind the cloak of modern liberalism. Every one of them were from a military background or the product of an education that warned us not to follow in the steps of those who had failed to see the dangers from communism and socialism.

This is what is wrong right now. We have failed to learn from history and now must fight this war again. I pray our children will learn and learn very fast. PatriotUSA

The Cold War We Lost
By Paul Kengor

What the HELL is going on???” emailed a colleague of mine after reading my most recent column for The American Spectator, regarding Bill de Blasio’s mayoral victory in New York. “Absolutely stunning.”

My friend was amazed that New Yorkers could—by a 50-point margin—elect a man who was so pro-Sandinista in the 1980s that he peddled subscriptions for the Marxist regime’s newspaper; who was so pro-Castro that he took his bride to Fidel’s Cuba for their honeymoon; who, in an earlier romance, sojourned to the Soviet Motherland; who now peddles his beliefs under the banner of “progress” and “social justice.” With finely honed Obama-like class-warfare rhetoric, Bill de Blasio preaches income leveling and attacks the rich who never pay their fair share. He now calls himself, as so many ex- and current communists do, a “progressive.” And he wins election in a landslide, with the proletariat rolling out the red carpet at city hall.

As I related in my article, New Yorkers have elected their first Red Diaper Baby Mayor to go with their first Red Diaper Baby President, who they likewise gleefully elected in landslides.

So, to repeat my friend’s plea: “What the HELL is going on???”

The answer, coincidentally, arrived in my email box moments earlier. It came from a college student, and was the sort I receive all-too-frequently. I’ve deleted his name and college to protect him from persecution by the tolerance-preaching academic left. Here’s what he wrote:
I had a Communist Prof. last semester and we were talking about communism in class and he stood in the front of the room and talked about how great communism is. He even held up his little red book a few times and yelled “Long live chairman Mao.”... If it wasn't the biggest class [the college] offers, there [were] 120 kids in the class, and if not 9 in the morning I probably would have said something. I have a reputation for speaking up…. I once told my English prof. that what he was saying was full of, pardon my speech, but bulls—t…. The stories I could tell you about my time at [college deleted] … I could write a whole New York Times best seller….
Mired in the academic gulag, this poor soul sought reprieve by watching an on-lecture I recently did, titled, “Why Did We Fight the Cold War?” It moved him to email me. It was totally unlike anything he had heard at his college—or most colleges in America.
Of course, none of what he wrote of his academic experience is a surprise. It also contains the answer to my friend’s plea. Indeed, this is the HELL that’s going on. And I saw it coming.

We won the Cold War in the 1980s, defeating the forces of communism and the left generally from Managua to Moscow, from Havana to Prague, from Berkeley to Manhattan. Ronald Reagan won a major ideological battle. Not only had communism been trounced, but so had liberalism, to the point that it eventually had to change its name to “progressivism” to make it more palatable to the uninformed. In tapping the “progressive” label, the left resurrected an old brand that the current wide-eyed generation knows practically nothing about. Communism was on the ash-heap of history. So was socialism. Their sister variants and off-shoots, including liberalism, were pretty much finished. There was no way a Democrat would win the White House in 1988, and in the 1990s Bill Clinton had to run as a moderate “New Democrat” preaching that “the era of big government is over.”

Sure, class warfare and redistribution still had welcome arms and eager demagogues in the Democratic Party, but they didn’t have much currency. Most of all, any politician with a communist past didn’t have a political future in America. Very few Americans in 1989 would have voted for such a person.

But alas, it’s a generation later, and something crucial happened in the interim: the political left retained control of higher education and much of education generally, not to mention Hollywood, television, and media. Positioned in the right places, the left controlled the most influential forces in the country and culture. This meant that the next generation never learned the vital lessons about the Cold War, about communism, about the pitfalls of the left’s penchant for centralization, collectivization, redistribution, government fiat, moral and cultural relativism, militant secularism, and on and on. The nation’s youth was ample prey for the left’s cynical misuse of phony slogans like “diversity” and “tolerance,” which the academy preaches mightily but doesn’t dare apply where it matters most in a university: ideas. Thus, the post-1989 generation learned the bad ideas that lost, not the good ones that won; the latter were refused and repressed.

Again, I saw it coming. I watched it up-close, personal. Around the country, I would speak to college audiences—on communism, socialism, progressivism, collectivism, redistributionism—where I’d repeatedly warn: We’re not learning these lessons. This stuff isn’t being taught. This will come back to haunt us.

Many times I’ve given a speech titled “Why Communism Is Bad,” often sponsored by the excellent Young America’s Foundation. Frustrated college students, captive to the likes of the aforementioned Maoist, beg me to come to their campus: “S.O.S. Please help!” As I speak, holding up primary sources ranging from Marx’s Manifesto to the Harvard University Press book The Black Book of Communism, laying out everything from communism’s war on property to war on religion, students are riveted. Left or right, Democrat or Republican, liberal or conservative, they’ve clearly heard none of it before. And they can tell I’m not lying to them. Facts are facts. You know truth when you hear it. That’s the beauty of truth. You hear it and nod; you intuitively get it.

And guess who’s not sitting in those classrooms as I speak? The professors. They rarely, if ever, attend. The one or two occasions where I recall a professor in attendance, she just shook her head in disgust, staring at me contemptuously as if the ghost of Joe McCarthy had flown into the room and leapt inside my body.

But here’s the bigger picture: Amid these lectures over the years, from attentive students to angry professors, I’d wonder if we really had won the Cold War.
Well, we did. We won the Cold War. In an important sense, however, we also lost it at home. We failed to teach the essential truths to the next generation. As my friend Herb Meyer likes to say, we’ve forgotten what we knew.

The left ensured the forgetting. It took over the necessary institutions to secure its triumph. And thus, the ugly stepsisters of communism—socialism, “progressivism,” communism and socialism cloaked as “progressivism,” centralization, collectivization, etc., etc., etc.—are now prevailing. It explains how the likes of de Blasio, Obama, Pelosi, Sebelius, Boxer, McAuliffe, get elected. It’s how Sandra Fluke becomes a “progressive” heroine rather than a public outrage. As they expand government and encroach on basic civil liberties (especially religious freedom), as they advance their postmodern nostrums and ever-expanding list of new “rights” and entitlements, their young foot soldiers have no idea that their ideas are really nothing new—rooted in the extremes of an ideology we had vanquished a generation ago.

Speaking of that vanquishing, the architect of victory, Ronald Reagan, said that freedom is never more than a generation away from extinction. Every new generation has to fight anew. That’s where we are. We have to fight all over again. It’s frustrating, yes, but the battle never ends. That, too, is the truth.

A challenge to an anonymous cowardly commenter

I seem to have upset some brave commenter from my Veteran's Day post. This individual is so stalwart, they go by anonymous. Imagine that! Here is the latest comment from this nasty piece of work:

"Look again Patriot! Your site is clouded with faulty politics! How sad that you would exploit this hateful agenda on Veterans day. You probably have never seen any action except on Halo 3 or at the Green Beans cafĂ© in Kuwait!"

Hateful agenda? Really? I will answer you directly and I am not going to waste a lot of time on you, period. Am I a racist, bigot? No foolish anonymous person only in your mind and other free thinking minds, but I AM against Islam, sharia law, against the perversion of modern progressive, regressive liberalism, against political correctness, excessive diversity and multiculturism. You have a problem with this or with what the other contributors post up here, then get lost. Go find your home at some flaming liberal site or drink some more Kool Aid. Maybe you need a fix of unicorn farts and pretty rainbows as a side dish to your nasty comments. Would you care to say your mettlesome words to my father law who served in WW2 and Korea. To my grandfather who fought on the western front in WW1, or my father, and uncles who served in WW2 and all the veterans I know. How about to their collective faces?

Now my answer to you, anonymous coward: I DO NOT play any video games, nice try. No I have not served but I come from a military family, see what I wrote above in case you forgot already. Does one have to serve to be a patriot, love freedom, liberty, the second amendment, willing to die for for the Republic, be willing to step up and fight against tyranny,  as we are witnessing now? I think not. What of those who answered the call at Lexington Green? How many of them had ever served before the Revolutionary war? I know many veterans and they have NO PROBLEM with my politics or what is posted here. No one holding a gun to your cowardly head and forcing you to drop in here and read what we post up here.

I could say a lot more but  you are not worth it. I will close with this: You want to write a GUEST POST in rebuttal to what is found here, then write one and contact me through the comment section of THIS post. The READERS of this site will decide on your positions versus what is found here. Otherwise anonymous coward, take this to your eyes: PISS OFF. PatriotUSA

Double vision leads to Obamacare optic nightmare for Obama

The fantasy of Obamacare being so wonderful has come crashing down for one Jessica Sandford from Federal Way, Washington. I feel a bit bad for her and her son but Obama should not have been so hot to trot with her story on how great the ACA was before WAITING to verify the story. This shows how desperate Obama and the progressive regressive liberals are to stop the bleeding, which now might be very fatal to the ACA and liberal control of mordor on the Potomac.

Please share this!

Posting will be erratic for me due to intractable pain. Just too much pain from too many angles. If I am silent it is because I am in the shadowlands. No explanation is offered or required. Prayers gladly accepted. Even when in the shadowlands, I am in the LIGHT. PatriotUSA

Devastating Optic For ObamaCare – The “Success Story” President Obama Highlighted In His Rose Garden Speech Collapses… (With Video)

By sundance

Of all the narrative collapses which could possibly have occurred, this has to be the most devastating.   Jessica Sanford reflects the ACTUAL REALITY of ObamaCare and President Obama used her example as advocacy.  WoW !   If the mainstream media picks up this story Obamacare might just collapse from the publicity.

Instead of $169/month as she thought, and President Obama claimed, her actual Obamacare premium cost is $621/month.   Even higher than her pre-Obamacare quotes from private insurance companies:

WASHINGTON - Jessica Sanford, the Federal Way woman who got a shout-out from President Obama last month with her fan letter for the Affordable Care Act, got a rather rude awakening last week.   Turns out she doesn’t qualify for a tax credit after all.

At least that’s what the letter said that she got from the state. Now she says her dream of affordable health insurance has gone poof. She can’t afford it. She’ll have to go without. “I’m really terribly embarrassed,” she says. “It has completely turned around on me. I mean, completely.”

Chalk it up to a bollixed-up state website that apparently still has major problems. Originally it said Sanford and her child would get a whopping tax credit that would reduce their total premium to $169 a month. Now the state is telling her it goofed – twice – and she has to pay full ticket.

There may even be a third goof involved: At least one health-insurance broker says she may qualify for a tax credit after all, albeit a small one. Officials at the state Healthplanfinder website could not be contacted Sunday night. But it just goes to show that even in the state of Washington, which has earned national kudos for a health-insurance exchange that seems to function better than the dysfunctional federal website, there are big, big problems.
“They have to own up to what is going on,” Sanford says. “They have to fix it. They can’t just go around and say this is working great. In my opinion they ought to shut it down and just get all of it straightened out.”
Sanford’s tale may not be all that unusual amid the national furor over Obamacare’s sputtering start. But it is particularly embarrassing because the president himself mentioned it in a speech, calling it a success story that makes the case for the program. These days fan letters are few and far between.

Obama related Sanford’s story in remarks from the Rose Garden last Oct. 21:
“I recently received a letter from a woman named Jessica Sanford in Washington state, and here’s what she wrote. ‘I am a single mom, no child support, self-employed, and I haven’t had health insurance for 15 years because it is too expensive. My son has ADHD and requires regular doctor visits, and his meds alone cost $250 a month. I have had an ongoing tendinitis problem due to my line of work that I have to have treated. Now, finally, we get to have coverage because of the ACA for $169 a month. I was crying the other day when I signed up. So much stress lifted.’
The president went on:
“Now, that is not untypical for a lot of folks like Jessica who have been struggling without health insurance. That is what the Affordable Care Act is all about.”
Yes, Sanford says, it was all true at the time she wrote the letter. She was ecstatic when she discovered she could sign up for a health plan that covered all her needs at a reasonable price. As a freelance court reporter, Sanford, 48, doesn’t make a lot – a little less than $50,000 a year.

That doesn’t go very far when there is a child in the household and his father doesn’t pay child support. Her 14-year-old son Ryan requires a special prescription medication that must be compounded. Before the Affordable Care Act came along, she was getting rate quotes of $500 and $600 a month. She just couldn’t afford health insurance, and her health care costs left her strapped.

That’s why she was one of the eager customers who was ready to sign up the moment the state website opened for business on Oct. 1. Washington is one of 14 states that went its own way, building its own site rather than relying on what turned out to be an error-plagued federal system. Although a computer glitch shut down the Washington Healthplanfinder website the first day, by Oct. 3, with the help of a broker, Sanford managed to enroll in a “gold”-level health plan offered by Premera Blue Cross.

The savings were tremendous. Thanks to the tax credit, Sanford qualified for a discount of $452 a month. “I was looking at it, and you know, it was like it was amazing. How was I supposed to know?”

{snip.  Before people challenge me on how I know what her quoted price was. If her discount was $452/month and her quoted out-of-pocket premium was $169/month, then her non-subsidized premium is $452+169 = $621/month…… /SD}

Sanford was so happy that she wrote a thank-you note to President Obama and dropped it in the mail. One of the president’s speechwriters contacted her and asked if he could use her story. When the president used her name she says it was one of the proudest moments of her life. “To think I would finally be covered if anything happened – I was so relieved.”

Then came the bad news.

Four days after President Obama made his address, the state health exchange publicly revealed a grievous error – its tax-credit calculations were all wrong. The state had been submitting monthly income information to the federal data hub, but the federal computers were expecting an annual figure. Suppose a person claimed an income of $50,000 a year — the tax credit was based on an income of $4,166 a year. The higher the income, the bigger the error.

Brokers say they caught the mistake right off the bat and tried flagging it to the state’s attention, but for some reason it took the state three weeks to acknowledge it. So everyone who purchased a subsidized health insurance policy through the Washington state exchange prior to Oct. 23 was quoted too low a rate. The mistake involved 4,600 policies covering 8,000 people – Sanford’s policy was one of them.  (read more)

This is SO BAD for Obama and the White House, if I didn’t know better I’d think Karl Rove was the impetus Jessica Sanford letter writer.  It is exactly the kind of thing he would have done to set up his opponent.

It seems CAIR's Southern California director Hussam Ayloush has a short fuse. That was evidenced Saturday night at the annual  CAIR convention at the Anaheim Hilton when a photographer interviewed him and asked him the magic question of whether he or CAIR would condemn Hamas as a terrorist organization. The interview started casually enough when the topic was about the FBI cutting off relations with CAIR and allowed Ayloush to get in a couple of sideways jabs at the FBI. Then things went south when the subject of Hamas came up. Watch and enjoy.
