Turning out dummies and losers: Thank our public education system

I have been an active father and my wife has been involved just as much in both of our kid's education. We home schooled them for years and when they hit middle school or junior high as we called it, we let  them attend public school.

Thank God we home schooled both our kids. Our son and daughter are excellent students and even more importantly, well grounded and they have a ton of common. sense. Both get excellent grades and have challenged many of their teachers attempts to brainwash them, especially our son. Our kids were raised that not everyone is a winner, life is not always fair and sometimes you MUST fight back and stand up for yourself, your friends and your beliefs. They know how to defend themselves and have no problem doing so. Our children are at odds with the DOE and NEA. They refuse to eat the pablum or drink the Kool Aid that is forced upon our kids in what goes for public education today.

This letter was in our local fish wrapper and the author hits it spot on in regard to the problems with our schools.


Dumbing down our kids

The Bulletin’s Jan. 16 front page news column titled “In schools, self-esteem boosting loses favor to rigor,” speaks volumes about what’s wrong with our country today.

To summarize, a growing body of research over the past three decades concluded that “daily affirmations, awards ceremonies and attendance certificates” lead to little, if any, academic gains. Academia now believes the new buzzwords are “persistence, risk-taking and resilience.” “We used to think we could hand children self-esteem on a platter,” Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck said. “That has backfired.”

One might suspect that grade inflation, peaceful playground rules, and not keeping score fall within their growing body of research as well.

Social and educational elites of this country, sanctioned by the U.S. Department of Education, experimented with two generations of American kids. The result: the physical and mental dumbing down of today’s youth. Is it any wonder that young adults today look to our government for utopian, quixotic solutions rather than their own God-given skills?

Educators spent three decades socially engineering our children’s learning intellect — and failed. What other regressive, life-altering outcomes are in store for Americans when all the regulations and mandates play out from the departments of Health, Housing, Energy, Labor and EPA?

To quote Thomas Jefferson, “My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government.” Allowing a powerful federal government to experiment with the welfare of American livelihood is contrary to the founding principles of this nation.

Schools aren't interested in imparting knowledge, they are interested in indoctrination and self-esteem. We see the results of these policies with OWS and the poor quality of college graduates.

I find it ironic that 95% of all freshmen in college need to take remedial English, Mathematics, or both.
