The President Demands Free Speech in Universities

This is something I consider as an important development in improving our universities and protecting free speech. Per his executive order (see first link below), the President has put universities on notice that if they expect to continue receiving federal funding, they must insure that everybody-including conservatives- has the right to enjoy free speech protections on campus.

https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/UC-Berkeley-in-spotlight-as-Trump-expected-to-13704663.php

Though UC Berkeley is in the spotlight here for good reason, the problem exists almost everywhere in academia. Most of the executive order concerns efforts to lower the coat of tuition, which is also a valid concern. I could have suggested that the cost of college could be drastically lowered by eliminating useless departments like ethnic studies, women's studies, gender studies, and Middle East studies (in its current Pan-Arab, anti-Israel, anti-West form). That would save a lot of 6-figure salaries for deans, their assistants, and other bureaucrats.

As for the free speech angle, I wish the order had gone into greater specificity. In other words, universities could have been put on notice that if certain groups have their events disrupted, or they have their speakers cancelled, or roadblocks like high security deposits are put in place, they risk losing federal funds. If Jewish and pro-Israel students continued to be harassed, no more funding. If campus police cannot or will not effectively enforce the law and protect all students, no more funds.

As always, the government must exercise care in controlling education. This should not be a tool to rid universities of all their liberal professors. There is, however, an old adage: If you take someone;s money, expect they will have a voice in how it is spent. Universities are under no compulsion to accept federal dollars. What is being said here is that the federal government can be in the business of funding education, but it doesn't want to fund indoctrination.

Final comment: Kudos to the College Republicans, a once moribund organization, that is now making real change possible for free speech advocates. They are the hope for the future of the Republican party, which has too many fossils sitting in Washington.

The real Brexit vote ...

In August 1941, Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill met in Newfoundland, and drew up the Atlantic Charter. The third principle of this document stated that:

"Third, they [FDR and WSC] respect the right of all peoples to choose the form of government under which they will live; and they wish to see sovereign rights and self-government restored to those who have been forcibly deprived of them."

The failure of the political elite to allow the British people to choose the form of government under which they will live is a betrayal of the very principles that Britain fought the war for.

But that is not the most important "Brexit" vote which we must cast. In Matthew 12, we read that the Pharisees challenged Jesus by asserting that He was acting in the name of the adversary. Jesus pointed out just how illogical this assertion was in verse 26: "If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. Then how will his kingdom stand?" And in verse 28, Jesus states: "But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you." (Matthew 12: 22-28)

As the well-known preacher Derek Prince has said, we have a record of Jesus Christ stating that there are two kingdoms: the kingdom of God and a kingdom of Satan. (Further passages of interest here would be Ephesians 6, verse 12 and 2 Corinthians 12: 2-4.)

Each of us has to choose which kingdom we are going to serve. This is the only "Brexit" vote that really matters. Are you going to knowingly choose to serve the father of lies, or will you ask Jesus Christ into your life?

The choice is yours.

The Democrats' Abuse of the Law

Gary Fouse

As I write this piece, we are still awaiting Robert Mueller's report on the Trump-Russian collusion investigation to be handed over to the attorney general, possibly sometime this week. Even the Democrats seem to know that Mueller has found no evidence that Trump had anything to do with the Russians' attempts to influence the 2016 presidential election.

No matter. Already, the House Democrats (who are now in charge of the House of Representatives) are signalling their intentions to launch numerous investigations of every aspect of Trump's life and career. They want his income tax returns. They want to subpoena members of his family to testify. They want to subpoena his past associates to testify. They want to subpoena former White House staff to testify. Even diplomatic interpreters who sat between Trump and Vladimir Putin. Already, they have dragged in discredited lawyer Michael Cohen to tell them and the nation that Trump is a "racist, a con-man, and a liar". It is clear that the Democrat controlled House under committee chairmen like Jerrold Nadler and Adam Schiff are determined to either impeach the President or at the very least, make him unelectable in 2020.

Partisanship aside, here is where they are going wrong, and I say this based on my experience as a retired federal agent (Drug Enforcement Administration). Law enforcement's job is to investigate crimes. That is, when a crime is committed, it is the job of law enforcement to determine who committed the crime. We investigate individuals based on information that they may have committed a crime. What the Democrats are now doing is taking an individual (Trump) and trying to find out everything they can about him in the hopes of finding something-anything- that he has done wrong in his life and career both prior to and during his political career. That is against the very spirit of the law in a free society. There are very few of us who could undergo such scrutiny, and I say this as someone who not only enforced the law but who has obeyed the law.  That said, most all of us have something in our past that at the very least, would sink our chances if we were running for elective office.

What the Democrats in Congress are now saying is this: "Here is the individual (Trump). Let us find the crime." To that, I say, "What is the crime?" Answer (and I have heard this said)? "That's why we need to investigate."

What if we turn all this around and say, "Let's investigate every aspect of Rep. Nadler's life-or Adam Schiff's life. We'll find something eventually. How about Maxine Waters seeing that she has gone off unhinged again at Trump this week? How quickly would we find dirt on her if she were put under the microscope? One day of hearings would be all it takes, but that's not going to happen.

This is not to suggest that Trump is a choir boy-far from it. I could be proven all wrong if tomorrow, Mueller hands over convincing evidence that Trump colluded with the Russians even though even the Democrats seem to know that will not be the case. If that is, indeed, the result of Mueller's investigation, then the Democrats in Congress are reduced to going back to square one and launching multiple investigations against an individual in the hopes of finding a crime. That is not what our criminal justice system is supposed to be about. That is a KGB tactic, whether done by police or political parties in charge of one branch of government.

I also want to address the issue of Trump's tax returns. The Democrats are demanding that he turn them over because they are convinced that a thorough examination of his multi-billion dollar business dealings will eventually reveal something. That is possible, but not the point. The point is that tax returns are private and Trump is under no obligation to show them to anybody. Let me give you an example. When I was a DEA agent-and US Customs agent before that- I had occasion to work often with IRS's Criminal Investigation Division. They were an effective tool in tracing the financial dealings of drug traffickers. However, I never had the ability to gain access to IRS tax returns (unless under specified and very limited circumstances). Were an IRS agent to share someone's tax returns with me, we would have been both liable to prosecution. So Trump should basically give the middle finger to those demands. Is he hiding something? Who knows? He is, however, within his legal  rights, and at the moment, legal rights are more important than ever.

Why? We have already witnessed the abuses of the FBI in whitewashing the crimes of presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and manufacturing a case against candidate Trump. A cabal at the highest levels of the FBI and Justice Department have abused their powers and tried to interfere in an election because they could not abide the thought of Trump actually defeating Clinton. It is arguably the biggest political scandal in our nation's history. And it isn't over yet. The Democrat party is actively trying to overturn the results of an election. Plan A was to tie Trump to the efforts of the Russian government to influence our election. With that effort apparently about to fail, Plan B is to start with the individual (Trump) and find a crime-any crime. That is not what our criminal justice system is all about.

Losing It ...

Running a marathon

"Therefore, since we are encompassed with such a great cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us." (Hebrews 12: 1 MEV)

Your life is not what you think it is. You can be strolling along, with not a care in the world, under the impression that you are in control of yourself and of what your life will be like, and suddenly you discover that none of that is true.

Your life is not your own, all sorts of things can happen to you, and your life circumstances can change with the speed of a single phone call. Like when your doctor phones you up one afternoon and says, "We've got a problem here. You'll need to come in."

As you walk along the lobby to the operating theatre, let me assure you that any pride you had in your body, or in your thinking, is knocked right out of you. As you walk past the other theatres, all of them busy, and you realise how many people are being operated on what is just another Thursday afternoon, you quickly wise up and understand that you are just another piece of meat on a conveyor belt. As you lie back on the operating table, you cannot help thinking that the robot above you which is about to slice and dice your guts just might be the last thing you ever see in this world. Pride in yourself? Not any more ..

If you're fortunate enough to survive major surgery, then you soon discover that you're not doing a 400 metre race - once round the hospital, cross the finishing line, pick up a medal and exit the stadium. No, you're running a long distance race - a real marathon. And if you're going to make it, then you have to do several things.

First of all, jettison all the non-essential things in your life. You wouldn't go out your front door and attempt to run for 26 odd miles with a rucksack on your back and carrying a big dumbbell in either hand now, would you? Get rid of any extra weight in your life then ...

That may mean giving some things up that you have always enjoyed, and which you want to keep in your life. But athletes who are training for a marathon have to get their priorities straight, and they set aside the sweeties and give up the booze ... you can do the same, just go through your life - and be ruthless about it.

Doing that may be necessary, but it's clearly not sufficient. You also have to be mentally tough. Keep putting one foot in front of the other. Don't give up, don't even contemplate it. Because here's the thing - if you're watching a marathon, you don't only cheer the athletes after they've crossed the finish line, you cheer them on while they're running the race - you encourage them to keep going.

"Therefore lift up your tired hands, and strengthen your weak knees. Make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame go out of joint, but rather be healed." (Hebrews 12: 12-13 MEV)

As you're running the marathon of life, always remember that God is behind you all the way. He's cheering you on! If we get our priorities right, stay focused on what is important, and stay tough, then we can reach the finishing line in good shape.
