Tools used in Female circumcision
Be warned: Real courage is being ready to step on a few 'cultural' toes
By Jenni Murray

I have felt bone-chilling fear twice in my life. The first occasion was while filming a television report about little British-born girls from London’s Somali community being sent abroad to have their genitals mutilated.

They call it female circumcision – an inadequate description of the radical and primitive surgery they’re forced to undergo.

Teachers in their schools had wept as they described bright young pupils of five or six coming back at the end of the holidays in agony and in deep shock, no longer able to manage the lavatory without crying out.

The local Imam, when I challenged him about such a barbaric practice, which he justified as a religious and cultural necessity to ensure their purity at marriage, had steely eyes which bored through me. ‘In the not too distant future,’ he intoned, ‘all British girls will be circumcised when Islam rules this country.’

That kind of thinking has not gone away. Last week we saw posters declaring that areas of East London are now subject to Sharia Law – a clearly unacceptable concept in a society with its own, highly developed legal system.

My second moment of terror came last Monday when Stephen Lennon, who leads the English Defence League (EDL), warned in conversation with Jeremy Paxman that the kind of extreme Right-wing violence witnessed in Norway was likely to be happening here in five to ten years.

There is, of course, precious little point in cowering in fear. There is every point in taking practical steps to prevent any of these extremists, whether religious or political, from wielding the power to disrupt what we hold most dear: a society in which men and women are equal; where there is freedom of speech which allows debate, but incites no harm; where everyone is free to practise their religion – or none – a society where we know we can send our children out safe in the knowledge that they will not be confronted by a madman.

But we have been too nervous of stepping on cultural toes to take the necessary action. Since 2004 it has been illegal to take a child out of the country to be mutilated.

The summer holidays is the time they will be taken abroad on the pretext of a vacation. France has similar legislation and 100 parents have been prosecuted. Here, no one has.

Later this year, the EDL is reported to be planning a march through Tower Hamlets in East London in a calculated provocation of the predominantly Muslim community that lives there. It’s the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street, when British Fascists, led by Oswald Mosley, faced the Jewish community in East London.

They were joined by all right-minded people who cried: ‘They shall not pass.’ We should learn a lesson from that time and ban such provocative demonstrations.

I have no doubt that the white, working-class male feels disgruntled at the loss of jobs and communities he has endured. I’ve seen the damage done by the destruction of the mining and textile industries in the Yorkshire towns in which I grew up.

We need to be brave and demand an open, safe, respectful society

Young men with nothing but drugs and alcohol to keep them occupied and a resentment of the apparent attention given to immigrant communities are dangerous.

They deserve education and training and the opportunity to be given back a work ethic and a sense of self-respect. They won’t get it through hate and prejudice. Nor will the fanatical Muslim.

Tolerant, fair-minded Brits can take a lead from a Norwegian girl who, when asked by her father, the novelist Jo Nesbo, if she was scared after the massacre there, replied: ‘Yes, but if you’re not scared, you can’t be brave.’

We need to be brave and demand an open, safe, respectful society, free of racism or violence, no matter whose ‘cultural’ toes we step on.

The below artical is very confused. On one hand its saying that Islam is bad. Then on the other its saying the EDL is bad because they are doing somthing about Islam.

Islam is not confused. It is single minded and wants our nation (I'm English).

The EDL has a democratic right to protest. They are doing so peacuflly. However some Anarchist groups and Islamic groups have made it clear this event will not pass peacefully.

I can't wait until not one, but a multitude of attacks happen. There is only so much that the average Pict, Saxon or Celt can endure before they snap.

I only wonder if they will paint their faces blue before they attack.

ADW,
That is just the authors opinion about the EDL and yes, while education is one of the keys in fighting islam, it is not going to do the trick alone.

I she thinks the EDL is made up of only "Young men with nothing but drugs and alcohol to keep them occupied and a resentment of the apparent attention given to immigrant communities are dangerous" then she is sadly mistaken and ignorant of the EDL an extremely ignorant of islam and the intentions of islam.

islam NEVER respects other cultures, societies, religions, so why should anyone respect islam? All that will do is get you a knife at throat at some point.

If you read some of the reader comments, she gets taken to task for assumptions about the EDL and it's members, as she should!!

LONG LIVE THE EDL!
