Kick the hornet's nest and you will get stung: Will Atlas learn?

"Pamela Geller gathers a lot of data about how practitioners of Islam interact with the West. Her website is quite useful sometimes. She also appears to have been involved in writing a book about Barrack Obama. But it does not follow that Geller has any understanding of the British legal and political context in which the English Defence League are trying to operate. Geller’s calling for people to leave the EDL and to align themselves with a new British CJ group led by the likes of Roberta Moore and Victor Vancier shows just how little she knows about life in Britain. Any Brit with eyes to see knows that Geller over-egged the pudding, then presented it while it was still half-baked. And no one who chooses their own plan of life, as Mill put it, is going to sit at Geller’s table and dine on such poor fare."

Indeed, and very well stated by Nick, who does the blog The Frozen North.

There was and still is a very serious disconnect that Geller started by her absurd comments about, against the EDL and Tommy Robinson. As this train wreck that Geller brought upon herself is now in the rear view mirror and sliding towards melding with the horizon, what Nick here states in his post, Atlas skids warrants your time and attention. I am not sure that this excellent commentary will get the coverage it deserves, so I am doing my part and reposting Nick's article below.

Please share this with those who care about counterjihad, defeating islam and sharia law.

When Geller kicked this hornet's nest that should have been left alone, she raised the ire and response of a quite a few bloggers who did not like what she said about the EDL or it's members, myself included. All groups and organizations similar to the EDL have an ongoing problem with nasty, racist, ant-Semitic types. In fact, those who are counterjihadists are regularly called and accused of being hateful islaomophobes, bigots, narrow minded far right wing kooks whether we are in the USA, England or Europe.

Geller tried to divide the EDL and throw her support towards Roberta Moore, a new group and the likes of Victor Vancier who just happens to have some rather nasty stuff against Christians on his site. She wanted those who would hopefully be so disgusted by what she was 'exposing' about the EDL to join up with Moore and her new group. Nice try, Pamela. Actually it was NOT nice and just plain mean. We knew we would be attacked. We were and then we were also accused of doing this to 'make a name for ourselves and our sites.' This was completely off base and very far from the truth. None of us other small blogs and sites cared about making a name for ourselves. It was and is about standing together in the fight, the war against islam and sharia law, standing up to a bully who thinks they are 'the counterjihad movement, period. That is still what this was all about and this next post shreds any and all weak foundations that Geller tried to stand upon.

If she is not careful, she will be the next Charles Johnson of Little Green Footballs fame, and that is kind of 'fame' you do not want.

Atlas skids
By Nick McAvelly

The American blogger Pamela Geller has said recently that she was concerned about the English Defence League being infiltrated and that she had voiced that concern earlier on her blog. This meme has been replicated in several blogs. (See The Other McCain, uncoverage and American Power.) A mutation of this, the claim that Geller wrote about a troubling issue in her initial article, has spread to several other blogs. (See Zilla, pumabydesign, loopyloo305.)

If Geller had simply wanted to write about people infiltrating the EDL, then she could have done so without over-egging the pudding. How do we know this? Because she has written about it before. In October 2010, we saw Geller laying the smack down on a paper that had tried to make something of people throwing Hitler salutes at an EDL rally. Geller explained that the EDL supported Israel, waved Israeli flags around every chance they got, and had an ongoing problem with infiltrators trying to discredit them by making Nazi comments and throwing salutes to the evil being we know as Adolf Hitler. (See link.)

Now it’s Geller who has made a series of similar assertions about the EDL, and Tommy Robinson is explaining that the EDL supports Israel, its members wave Israeli flags around every chance they get, and they have an ongoing problem with infiltrators trying to discredit them. (Robinson adds that such people always have been, and always will be, kicked out of the EDL.) (See link.)

What Tommy Robinson has said, and what Geller herself said earlier, is not breaking news. Everyone who supports the EDL understands that the EDL have faced this problem since day one. That obviously includes the bloggers who signed off on that open letter to Geller, who stood up for the EDL after Geller had written them off as a forlorn hope.

And that is what she did. Geller said on her blog that she stood by her earlier concern about antisemism in the EDL’s leadership. (Link 1. Link 2.) But in her initial article, Geller did not say that although the EDL supports Israel and waves the Israeli flag around every chance they get, she was concerned about antisemitism in the EDL’s leadership. Instead, Geller made a series of radical assertions about the EDL. She stated that the EDL had morphed into something unrecognisable, the EDL were heading in a terrible direction and the forces of good had failed to recapture the heart and soul of the EDL. This assertion of Geller’s is particularly interesting. Obviously if something needs to be recaptured, then it has already been lost. So if one unpacks Geller’s assertion, she’s saying that the forces of good have been defeated not once, but twice. And who would the forces of good be defeated by? The adversary. Geller then wrote the EDL off, exhorted its members to abandon the organisation, and envisioned an all-new British CJ effort led by Roberta Moore. (See link.)

We now know that Roberta Moore was trying to align the English Defence League with Victor Vancier, who is the head of an American outfit called the Jewish Task Force. Mr. Vancier has been convicted of carrying out acts of domestic terrorism in the USA. He has, as they say in America, done hard time. Just look at the following links: Link 1. Link 2. Link 3. Link 4. Link 5. Link 6. Link 7.

If Roberta Moore was leading the new British group which Pam Geller envisions in her article, then she would probaby forge links with Mr. Vancier again. After all, she’s got form. One also finds an interesting remark about Mr. Vancier here, in the comments section beneath ‘Roberta Moore’s statement on behalf of the EDL’. (Note that Pamela Geller links to that statement from her blog.) When asked about Mr. Vancier’s criminal record, the response was: ‘We believe in malignant and benign terrorism. Victor fits in the latter.’

Benign terrorism?

Roberta Moore and Victor Vancier are clearly not a ‘dream team’ that is going to ride into Britain and save the day. After all, Mr. Vancier is American. His organisation is based in America. And he has been convicted of carrying out acts of domestic terrorism in America. It does seem rather obvious that Brits who oppose terrorism are not going to join forces with someone whose base isn’t even in Britain, and who has already been jailed for carrying out terrorist acts. As the judge at Mr. Vancier’s ’87 trial said, ‘You don’t go bombing innocent people to make a point.’

There is another matter that ought to be addressed. If one visits Mr. Vancier’s group’s website, one can click through to a Hebrew language forum at hayamin dot org. Here is a video which appears to show some highly offensive anti-Christian material on that site: See link. There are several links on that youtube page, which anyone reading this can investigate for themselves. (Links like this one.)

Geller’s radical assertions and even more extreme conclusions are now being denied by their author then. An obvious distinction can be drawn between the inner psychological state of a human being and any statement they make about the external world. Clearly the truth value of any assertion about the external world cannot be determined by trying to discover the inner psychological state of whoever made the assertion. The truth value of that assertion depends on conditions in the external world. It either corresponds to reality or it does not. So when Geller says she stands by her concern about something she wrote about earlier, that say nothing at all about the truth value of her earlier statements. If some blogger intimates that Geller was troubled by what she wrote, that speaks only to Geller’s alleged inner state (or perhaps to the blogger’s), but it has no bearing whatsoever on the truth value of Geller’s actual statements.

Geller has been challenged by some other bloggers to reconsider what she had said. It is worth noting that in an open letter signed by these bloggers there are no ad hominem statements whatsoever. Geller’s earlier statements about the EDL are described as deplorable and unfortunate, but nothing in that open letter refers to Geller herself. (See link.) It has been interesting to see Geller’s response. She launched into an extended campaign of ad homimem abuse aimed at those bloggers, which is clearly irrational behaviour. Then she said that she stood by her own psychological condition, all the while ignoring her earlier statements about the EDL. Such linguistic legerdemain is comparable to the finest work of writers like Campbell, or even Ramadan.

A distinction can also be drawn between prominence and leadership. Geller may have manoeuvred herself into a position of prominence in the CJ movement, but it does not follow that she is entitled, or even able, to lead anyone else. John Stuart Mill once wrote:

"He who lets the world, or his own portion of it, choose his plan of life for him, has no need of any other faculty than the ape-like one of imitation. He who chooses his plan for himself, employs all his faculties. He must use observation to see, reasoning and judgement to foresee, activity to gather materials for decision, discrimination to decide, and when he has decided, firmness and self-control to hold to his deliberate decision." (John Stuart Mill, On Liberty)

Pamela Geller gathers a lot of data about how practitioners of Islam interact with the West. And no one who chooses their own plan of life, as Mill put it, is going to sit at Geller’s table and dine on such poor fare.

And the other type of people Mill refers to? Her brand name may be prominent just now, and her website may be fairly popular. But if Geller keeps trying to go beyond what she is able to do, then she’ll become a divisive figure, as recent events have shown. Any good work she’s done will be devalued. And she’ll end up with the followers she deserves.

Thanks for posting my essay. One small point: I believe the second-to-last paragraph is incomplete (following 'the likes of Roberta Moore and Victor Vancier ...')

I do think that Ms. Geller went too far with her original article. I find it particularly interesting that she would couch her denunciation of the EDL in moral terms. Her assertion that the forces of good had been defeated - twice - is especially interesting.

This is no mere airing of concern. This is not just an announcement that as an individual, you do not wish to support a particular group. What Geller did was to say that the adversary of what is good (see link) had taken control of the EDL.

The question arises: if the EDL had morphed into something unrecognisable - if that assertion was true - then how was it possible for the leader of the EDL to stand up and say that the EDL supported Israel - the same as always?

If the EDL was on a terrible path - if that assertion was true - then why did the leader of the EDL stand up and say they were on the same path they'd always been on?

If the adversary of the good was now in charge of the EDL, how was it even possible for the leader of the EDL to stand up and state publicly and unequivocally that the EDL supports Israel 100%, always had and always will?

Tommy Robinson's statement does not support the assertions made by PG in her original article - it refutes them!

Hello Nick,
Thanks for catching that and that paragraph has been corrected. I try my best but as I am often doing this very late at night or early A.M., I do miss a spot or two on occasion.

The EDl's support for Israel has never been in doubt from all I have read, watched and heard. Geller as you mentioned has had a bad habit of lashing out strongly(at times with ignorance, arrogance and lack of facts) against anything that smacks of being anti-Semitic anti Jewish, even on the tiniest scale and that is her prerogative. This has done harm to the very causes she supports and works so hard for, the counterjihad movement and the fight against islam, islamization of the west.

My respect and trust are hard to earn and not that it matters in the big scheme of events, if you catch my drift. Once you attack those who are my friends, allies in this fight, my respect for you will be next to nil. I will back my friends and allies and am more than willing to take heat and flak on their behalf.

You are there, I and others are not and what you have to say is of paramount importance. You are the boots on the ground, our eyes as to what is REALLY happening in England.

Any time you want me to post something of your here, just let me know. More than pleased to do so!

I stopped reading Atlas Shrugs. I find it sloppy to the eyes and 1/2 the time her information is wrong.

PatriotUSA said...

Same here, Findalis. I seldom use Jihad Watch anymore as Spencer did nothing to defuse the wrong accusations by Geller against the EDL and those of us who came out in support of the EDL.

I was basically kicked off both sites, Jihad watch and Atlas Shrugs for standing with the EDL and Tommy Robinson, but do not care.

It is about the war against islam and sharia law, not about who is the biggest and best in the counterjihad movement. Disison within makes the entire CJ movement appear weak and we both know that islam thrives on and will exploit such weakness.

I stand with those who are my friends and allies, period!

I lost a ton of respect for Atlas Shrugs when she was using YouTube *tit shots* to promote her blog...

She had one where she was at some beach and was opening and closing her legs in a highly provocative manner...

I had NO problem with sending her a personal message and stating that if she wanted to show off her *wares* that was fine, but don't do it to garner hits for her *supposed* Conservative political blog..

I was promptly unfriended...

I don't care what she writes, I stopped following her when she used her *looks* to sell Atlas, and haven't cared one bit for her ever since...

I don't care what anyone puts on their blog either, but if you're gonna use T&A to *promote* your blog, then be a T&A blog, don't pander your a$$ and still call yourself a Conservative...

I abhor hypocrites... Atlas Shrugs owner Pamela Geller *got there* on *skin*, if she becomes a Charles Johnson she won't last any longer than a snow ball in Texas in July...

I seem to recall what you mentioned Fred and yes this is sadly true. Geller seems to have no problem doing whatever it takes to promote AS which is a shame. That type of stuff was NEVER needed as AS was a very good and knowledgeable site for quite a few years.

Fighting the scourge of islam, every bit of it, is not about number of hits and visitors to your site. It is about educating people through the truth, honesty, knowing your enemy and subject matter.

I was given the boot at AS and JW almost as soon as I added my name to the letter protesting what AS and JW stated about the EDL and Robinson. as mentioned before, I do not care as I have many friends and other sources within the CJ movement. I decided to leave JW and SIOA links up in the blogroll here. No need to stoop to low levels like others have decided to do.

Robert Spencer has authored some excellent books and I have never really had an issue with him or JW until he was part of the attack on the EDL and did little to defuse what Geller did.

I know how the late night thing goes, absolutely. I'm doing 8 extra night shifts in a 3 week spell just now. Rather taxing, to say the least.

It's such a shame the someone in Geller's position would behave in such a way. She was obviously wrong to say what she initially did about the English Defence League.

She did not merely air some concerns - she wrote the EDL off, wanted their members to leave, and envisioned a brand new British CJ group led by Roberta Moore. Who as we now know had already tried to align the EDL with Victor Vancier. So it's highly likely that she'd do the same with this new CJ group which Pamela envisioned. I've posted a few comments on some of the blogs that 'stood with Pamela' and none of them have responded to any of this. Most of them have deleted the comments I made, and with them the links showing Mr. Vancier's past convictions in America.

But this was Pamela's vision for the UK. A far cry from simply airing a concern, eh?

For me, it's not just that the Pamela said all that in the first place. Although that's bad enough. It's the way she responded to being asked to reconsider what she said.

Refusing to acknowledge what she said. Carrying out personal attacks on anyone who questions her.

It's difficult to understand how someone could behave in this way. After all, if you're wrong, then you're wrong. Big deal. We're all fallible, and if you think you're not ...

then you're wrong, LOL..

When Victor Vancier was sent down in '87 for racketeering, arson, bombings and fraud, his own lawyer described him as 'nuts'. The judge told him that you don't go around bombing people to make a point. And his partner in crime, one Jay Cohen, took and OD and died in some hotel room after their activities had come to light. Vancier is quoted in the NY Times as saying he felt responsible for Mr. Cohen's death. (See link.)

None of this makes teaming up with Mr. Vancier seem like a good idea.

Unless your name is Roberta Moore, apparently.

Whose judgement Pamela Geller trusts more than anyone else in the EDL. That would include Tommy Robinson then.

Yes, she said that too.

Funnily enough, Pamela changed her mind about writing the EDL off and setting up a new British CJ group led by Roberta Moore after Tommy Robinson spoke up.

So apparently, five minutes after saying she trusted Roberta Moore's judgement more than she trusted Tommy's .. Pamela did a 180 and trusted Tommy's judgment more than she did Roberta Moore's.

One more assertion made by the Pamela in her original post which turned out to be false.
