Urgent: Ask Ore. State Senators to Oppose In-State Tuition for Illegal Aliens

Our friends at Oregonians for Immigration Reform (OFIR) tell us that the full Senate will vote this week on SB 742 – a bill to give illegal aliens access to subsidized in-state tuition rates.

Please call and email Senate President Peter Courtney -- 503-986-1600; sen.petercourtney@state.or.us – to tell him SB 742 is an affront to taxpayers and legal students and should be shelved.

Also, please call your State Senator and ask him/her to vote no on SB 742. Be sure to send this fax to your Oregon Senator.

Talking Points for Senate President Courtney

--SB 742, which would give illegal aliens access to subsidized, in-state tuition rates, is an affront to taxpayers and legal students. It should be shelved.

--In-state tuition fees are highly subsidized by state taxpayers. The estimated annual tuition and fees at the University of Oregon are $8,190 for in-state students and $25,830 for out-of-state students. That means SB 742 would force Oregon taxpayers to provide a subsidy of about $17,640 per year for every illegal-alien student!

--SB 742 would violate federal law. The Illegal Immigrant Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 prohibits states from offering a benefit to illegal aliens that U.S. citizens from another state can’t receive.

--Even if illegal-alien students get a college degree, they are still in the country illegally and cannot legally obtain employment. As such, it makes no sense to subsidize the education of illegal aliens.

--Proponents of SB 742 say that it is “tuition equity.” How is it tuition equity if an out-of-state citizen, legal immigrant or legal foreign student must pay $17,600 more per year than an illegal alien?

--Do not forget that for every illegal alien admitted to a college, an American student or legal resident is turned away. Do the right thing and pull SB 742 from consideration. Voters like me will be watching.
