I had actually thought about this but now that I have been reminded about it, I am sharing the comment left by this reader.

"Perhaps, Obama's dog had to fly separately since Islam does not approve of dogs as pets? I've done research on this topic and have discovered that Islam does not allow dogs as pets...they are only to be used for hunting and as guard dogs. So, if Obama is truly a Muslim, this would explain why BO cannot fly in the same plane...dogs are not to be kept in a Muslim's home nor can they sleep with their dog(s), nor can they have photos of a dog in their home. Don't you think that would explain a whole lot, folks?"
