This was sent to be be a very good friend down in Southern California. Ray Musser is a Councilman for the City of Upland, California. I used to live very close to Upland in Claremont. July 4th! - "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."
This well-known opening portion of the "pre-amble" to the Declaration of the United States has come to represent for many people a moral standard for which the United States should strive. John Adams wrote the pre-amble as an explanation for the purpose of the Declaration. Abraham Lincoln considered the Declaration to be the foundation of his political philosophy, and promoted the idea that the Declaration is a statement of principles through which the United States Constitution should be interpreted.
As we celebrate another year of freedom from the tyranny of kings and despots, I hope that each of you will remember with your families the wonders and wisdom of the gift that our founding fathers gave us in liberty. May we all be continually thankful for the freedoms that we so often and so easily take for granted. Whether you attend our Upland family 4th of July at Upland High School or spend it at home or away with family, I sincerely wish you all the best that living in America truly means.
I also want to add a special note of gratitude to the men and women who serve in every capacity of law enforcement, to the military, to our beloved fire personnel. Happy 4th to all!
