Campbell Soup (CPB) is making kids' favorite dinner better for them.
Campbell said it is cutting the amount of sodium in its SpaghettiOs canned pastas by up to 35%. It's the second time in two years that the company has lowered the sodium level of the pasta dish, and it's the latest product to be made healthier.
In the past four years, Campbell has cut sodium by 25% to 50% in more than 100 of its products, including soups, V8 juices, Prego sauces and Pepperidge Farm breads, the company said.
Consumers will be able shop for a number of lower-sodium SpaghettiOs products in coming months, with the original SpaghettiOs and SpaghettiOs A to Z's hitting store shelves in April. The remaining reduced-sodium products will come in July.
"Offering healthier versions of our products for kids is a major priority for Campbell," said Sean Connolly, president of Campbell's U.S. soups, sauces and beverages.
"Changing the recipe of SpaghettiOs comes on the heels of reducing sodium in our condensed kids soups to healthy levels. It's also consistent with our commitment to advertise only sound food choices to children," Connolly said.
Food companies have tried to make their products healthier as more American kids suffer from obesity. Last week, General Mills (GIS) said it will cut back on the amount of sugar in the cereals that are marketed to children, like Lucky Charms and Trix.
