The Grapes Of Wrath… Americans Will Turn On Other Americans

I am posting this with deeply conflicted thoughts. I know Steinbeck well, extremely well. I have read almost every one of his books, short stories and have read Grapes Of Wrath at least 15 times. I have a second edition copy that was given to me by my mother. Americans will again one day turn on each other. Not all of us will but there are those who will commit outright murder, mayhem and do other heinous things to even their own family. I have always enjoyed Steinbeck's writing.

It is hard to see any light at times and with a regime gone berserk such as we have now, the seeds that were planted decades ago have sprouted and grown into something VERY poisonous to every one of us. Some of us see this better than others. I refused to see, believe this for many, many years. Not any more. It started in 1979 when then POTUS Jimmy the dhimmi Carter fumbled the crisis in Iran at the American Embassy so badly. It continued from there with foreign and domestic events that have convinced me the United States is on the express train to a complete breakdown of society. They are waiting for the right time and martial law will be declared after a catastrophic event or will it be just one more LAX shooting as the excuse? Good people, will overnight become enemies of the state regime. I hope and pray this will not happen but if it does, I hope I will have already been called home. If I here when the SHTF then know this, I will defend the ground on which I stand, I will defend my family and home as long as I draw breath. It is that simple and it is only complicated if you think otherwise. There are few I truly hold as friends and even fewer that I trust. You know who you are and that is just the way it may end up having to be. Do not weep for me for I am but one. Weep for A Republic that may very well have to burn to the ground, those very flames which can only be extinguished by the blood of those who truly are willing to pay the highest price for freedom. What say you, dear readers, what say you? PatriotUSA

The Grapes Of Wrath… Americans Will Turn On Other Americans

The Grapes Of Wrath… Americans Will Turn On Other Americans

Watch this video.  If you have never read “The Grapes of Wrath”, Or haven’t read the book, you need to.  In this scene, these people were pushed off of their land by government/banks.  I cannot find the next scene.  But, in the next clip, they bulldoze this man’s home.  As he is screaming at the man on the tractor, who is getting ready to bulldoze his land and house, the tractor worker replies: “I HAVE TO GET PAID, FAMILY TO FEED! GET OUT OF THE WAY!”

So, think again if you really believe that an American neighbor will help another neighbor…

While Steinbeck may have written stories, these are actual events that occurred many times during the Great Depression.

I read a lot of Steinbeck's work a few years back. In Dubious Battle, Travels with Charley, Cannery Row, lots of short stories, etc. But for some reason I never got around to reading Grapes of Wrath.

I don't know if I ever told you this story, but when I was little we emigrated to Canada; my dad went to sea there - remember that movie The Perfect Storm? I watched that with my dad & he was like, I've been out there! Anyhow, when dad was off to sea my mum would read to me, so I learnt to read really early on. After we came back home again I ended up reading all the books in the first school I went to. They even had to send over to the next school to get more reading material for me. (I didn't know this at the time, I was just having a ball reading all those books.) Anyhow, by the time I was in Primary 3, which would be when I was round about 8 years old, I can remember reading everything I could get my hands on by Jack London and Mark Twain. There really have been some first class American writers over the years.

Many years later I experimented with Jack Kerouac, read Desolation Angels, Dharma Bums etc. Never really hit it off with Hemingway, although "Soldier's Home" is one of the finest short stories ever written. I also spent quite a bit of time reading Raymond Carver's work, both his short stories and his poetry. Like I said, some first class writers.

Lo' Nick,

I never cared for Hemingway much either except for "Old man and the Sea" as I am a life time fisherman.

Jack London is good but Steinbeck is my favorite. In Dubious Battle was perhaps, no is his sleeper book. I must beg you to read Grapes Of Wrath as it is an American story that will =happen again. I know the territory of Steinbeck's writings. I have been to Cannery Row, know the Central valley of California quite well. In fact when I was there just a few weeks ago being in Fresno brought Steinbeck home to me. I have worked in the orchards when I was a kid along side noble Americans and Mexicans, NOT stinking Chicanos who think they are owed everything by birth here is the USA. Working by and with such fine folks helped form and mold my morals, ethics and values into what I be today, whatever people see me as being. Many of these folks were right out of Steinbeck's novels including the agitators from the communist party who tried to sway and befriend me at a very young age. They failed quite badly, did they not.

Thanks for sharing mate. Much appreciated, so very, very much appreciated.

I have to tell you about my dad & me watching that film in the cinema, we were in the front row so we were sitting with our feet up on the bottom rung of the dividing rail, when the waves came crashing in over the side of the boat on the screen, my dad pulled his feet up (as I had seen him do aboard a real boat when a wave came over the side) which got me laughing, "It's ok dad you're not at sea now you ken ... "

One of those moments you remember ...

I enjoyed the book too. But many things in the great depression were far more complicated then our modern out of context view can comprehend. The best example is the one illustrated here. The land was not theirs. Simple as that. They contracted and though no fault of theirs they couldn't meet the contract so the land owner had to take steps to keep the land in production. That is the simplest explanation but it was even more complicated then that. Without looking more deeply into problems you will undoubtedly place blame where it does not belong. As far as shooting the sheriff or anyone simply doing their job I won't do it. We are facing a economic collapse. No one knows or can know how bad it will be or how long it will last. But what we all know (or should know if we are paying attention) is we are facing an economic collapse. So if someone isn't preparing for it then whose fault will it be when you wind up like the Joad family? Right now you can buy silver or buckets of grain and #10 cans of freeze dried food. You can pay off your debts and/or stash a wad of cash. You can learn a survival skill and set up alternatives to get water and cook food. The list of possible preparations is endless and easy so again whose fault will it be if someone is caught totally unprepared?

Grapes of Wraith is one of the greatest pieces of literature of the 20th Century. The movie was liberal bs. The book is a story of hard times. Times that are coming back thanks to Barack Obama.

The movie indeed, did NOT do credit to the book or Steinbeck. Yes, hard times are right around the corner.

As to Anonymous's comment, what makes you think I, we have not looked deeper into this and other problems? Slinging a wide paint brush there. Many are prepping as best they can and sadly many more are not. Always a treat to have folks posting under anonymous handle.
