I wonder if anyone would be offended if we were to make a Koran with pig's blood and covered in pig's skin? Would work for me.

Ann Barnhardt uses bacon as bookmarks. That might be easier?

When did someone decide that being "offended" even matters?

John Stuart Mill wrote:

" The object of this Essay is to assert one very simple principle, as entitled to govern absolutely the dealings of society with the individual in the way of compulsion and control, whether the means used be physical force in the form of legal penalties, or the moral coercion of public opinion. That principle is, that the sole end for which mankind are warranted, individually or collectively, in interfering with the liberty of action of any of their number, is self-protection. That the only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others. His own good, either physical or moral, is not a sufficient warrant. He cannot rightfully be compelled to do or forbear because it will be better for him to do so, because it will make him happier, because, in the opinions of others, to do so would be wise, or even right. These are good reasons for remonstrating with him, or reasoning with him, or persuading him, or entreating him, but not for compelling him, or visiting him with any evil in case he do otherwise."

No one particularly enjoys being told that they're wrong. But in any civilised society it is perfectly acceptable to remonstrate, persuade or entreat someone in order to try to change their mind. However it is not acceptable to visit harm upon someone who does so in order to protect the feelings of the listener - yet this is the crazy, topsy-turvy worldview adopted by the political class, and imposed upon the rest of us - in direct contradiction to the foundational principles laid down by Mill in one of the most important texts on freedom of speech ever written.

When I was a practicing alcoholic my younger brother sat me down one night and told me a few home truths.

Was I offended? Well, I suppose I was. But that was neither here nor there - and I knew that he was telling me the truth, regardless of how I took it.

And you know what - it was the best thing he could have done for me. Sometimes you need to hear a few hard truths.

Should my brother have been found guilty of a criminal offence because he sat me down and told me the truth, and tried to get me to change the way I looked at the world, and lived in the world?

Of course not.

Neither should anyone else.

So after sobering up, a decade of relative normality and a philosophy degree later, I think I'm in a pretty good position to make the following assertion - and I dare any politician alive to try to refute it:

If someone is offended when they hear the truth spoken, that is absolutely irrelevant.

Superbly put to bed Nick, superbly put to bed.

The truth is NOT offensive but Islam and sharia law are.
